I did too-- a short hop over Lake Erie to Put-In-Bay and back in the early '70's. The whole airplane vibrated and dust floated throughout the passenger compartment. :)

I bought my son a ride in that exact airplane at oshkosh last year at the EAA fly in.. I rode in a different tri motor in 1963 at the EAA fly in at Rockford ,IL. They have to make every single part including the skins when doing heavy maintenance. Unique aircraft with interesting history.

so bummed the tri-motor will be at the Oakland County Airport in July...of course I'll be 1400 miles away on vacation! after staring at these for years at the Henry Ford I'm disappointed I won't be around to see it

One of those motors on that plane will fit beautifully on a 32.

    Thanks for sharing

Absolutely fantastic, my favorite aircraft!! I have the book which tells the history of every single Ford Trimotor ever built. Thanks a million!

i also flew on the same airplane sometime around '73 or so. Got the right seat so I had to wipe oil off the windshield. Stops on North Bass Island, Middle Bass Island, and South Bass Island. No pickups on Rattlesnake Island that day.

That is a gorgeous aircraft. Incredible restoration job.

I'm nearly 100% sure the airport scenes for "The Family Jewels" were filmed at the El Toro Marine Base in Irvine, Ca. (Now closed), but the tower is Orange County Airport. The in-flight scenes were filmed over South Orange County, mostly the city known as Irvine. All that property below has been developed into housing tracts.

I guess you need good eyesight to pilot one of those as the gauges for the left and right engines are mounted on the engines themselves. Love the external control cables too.

  13. I've also flown in that exact plane.

It was an experience I won't soon forget.

A very cool piece of history.

That is one badass flying machine! I have to say though my favorite part is the repurposing of the Model A dome light switch.

Grand Canyon Airlines here in Arizona also has a 1929 Ford Tri-motor in their fleet. I had the opprotunity to take a ride in it where I work here in Phoenix (Deer Valley Airport) a few years ago. It was totally bitchin'.

I wish I had taken some photos with my 1929 Model A Woodie parked in front of it, just a couple of old '29 Fords.
