I pulled my Edelbrock 1406 off of the '91 SBC 350 in my '53 Chevy pickup last night for a rebuild. I put the carb on the 350 in 1993, right out of the box without any tuning at all, and it ran perfectly all these years. I haven't touched it until now. It was smelling like raw fuel after shutting it down, and I figured it had a sticking float or crud in it somewhere.

The bowls were full of sediment and muck, but otherwise everything looked pretty good. I could see a bit of wear on the metering rods, but I put them back in. I put everything back together with new gaskets after a good cleaning, and put it back on the engine. I also installed an Edelbrock dual plane manifold heat spacer between the carb and Performer intake, but otherwise everything was put back just like it was prior to the rebuild.

Fired it up, and it idles fine, but has a bit of a stutter right after it comes off of idle, and runs rough and irregular cruising down the street at about 25 mph.

I was thinking maybe it had a vacuum leak with the new carb spacer, but didn't get a rise in rpm spraying carb cleaner around the base of the carb. Other than the fuel smell, it ran great before the rebuild.

Not sure where to look for the problem, looking for any pointers...

    Thanks in advance,

    Pete

Is the choke working and is it properly adjusted? Do you have a good strong accelerator pump shot? Did you possibly forget to install a check ball for the accelerator pump inlet or discharge port?

Double check the gaskets at the ventury nozzles and the nozzles for blockage. A vacuum leak or blocked p***age at the gasket interface will give the symptoms described.

I'm thinking it may be the primary Venturi gaskets, or some crud in there that I missed. The gaskets for the venturis were slightly different, but I couldn't see where it would make a difference. I save the old ones that were fine, maybe I'll put them back in

Make sure you got all the wells for the idle emulsion tubes and that the tubes, air bleeds and jets are all clear. Those are small holes and stuff likes to congregate there. Looks like you did completely ***emble it, so maybe you just missed some small thing.

If the rods had wear, chances are that the jets had the same problem. I had to replace them on a friends car to cure an off idle stumble. (Both the rods and jets.)

Check throttle shafts for excessive wear.

Edelbrock 1405. Just had the same problem and tried ignition, timing, new points and cap, filter, and Misc. other ****.

Removed the idle screws, shot some Carb. cleaner in the holes, air hosed them and BINGO, problem solved. New car!

Listen to old Henry, the carb is worn out due to pumping it during starting. When you pump the carb it wears out the bottom throttle shaft. Back in the 70's Carter sold plenty of these for this reason.

Must have been some crud floating around in there somewhere... I drove if around town the last couple of days, and whatever was causing it to run ****ty has cleared itself. It runs great, starts east hot or cold, just like new.

I also figured out where the raw fuel smell was coming from... The diaphragm in the fuel pump has gone south and is spitting fuel out the weep hole, right onto the headers ... :0

Picking u a new pump tomorrow.
