Yeah yeah,,, already know what a terrible setup it is. Been in my truck for 3 years and VERY happy with it. Here lies my question. When I installed the setup I had a 351M and C6, which we know weights a **** ton. I've now gone to a 302 and AOD setup. Drives like a dream but seems to really bang on the bumps, its almost too rough for comfort sometimes. 99% sure my font was out of an interceptor, which has heavier springs. Anyone else find their front to be stiff? Tried it with civilian springs? Tried it with any other sort of spings? I'd like to soften it up a bit, Denver roads aren't always the best. Just not cool to take your date out and jar out her teeth before you get to dinner.
I don't have a Crown Vic but changing shocks made a world of difference on my Mustang II set up. With the stock shocks rode very "harsh" but I swapped them for adjustable ones that let me set them real soft when i want to cruse and stiffer when I want to turn. It might be something to try before changing your springs out.
Have no desire to put aibags on it. static ride height is fine with me, and they're a can of worms I don't want to open. (fixed enough for friends I've seen them at the worst!) Might try the new shocks idea, new springs will run about 100-150, shocks should be a bit less I'd guess
Change the springs. Weigh the front end......call a competent spring supplier and give them whatever info they ask for and they should be able to provide what you need.
Was having the same problems, every bump in the road felt like a major pot hole Took out that m***ive torsion bar, what a difference, now rides like it should, there is a small mount of leaning in tight corners but is better that the constant crashing. I have car struts and car springs with 1/2 coil cut off, rides approx 1" into the 3" travel on the strut. Running 5.0 EFI AOD and T-Bird IRS
Rick, what tires are you running? was wondering if I an cut a bit out. Ill try it without the sway bar and see how it goes. Aside from the IRS you've got the same setup.
Just a thought, was the engine in the vic set back into the firewall alot? Seems newer cars have more setback, so with that is your engine more up front on the suspension, is it possible the springs are to light and the suspension is bottoming out? Any way you can check the travel on the shocks? Pete
The interceptor shocks are a lot harder than the standard ones. For about $40 you can test the difference easily.
I'll throw some shocks on it this weekend and then give the sway bar the heave and see what both do to it. The vics arent set back that far, about close to wee mine is at. The crossmember is the engine mount in both situations.
when you put the 302/aod in how much did it drop from no engine/trans? my buddy has cv in his 65 and his donor was cop car with 900# springs. when we dropped the 302/c5 in it it barely dropped any. i'd say maybe an inch at most. i think the civi springs are 600# and i think i've heard the cop cars had gas shocks and the civi had oil filled. just what i've heard. i'd look for civi springs or better yet try and source th tech info on the springs and see about ordering some the way i like.
i think the jump from civi to cop rating is to broad. 50% jump is pretty drastic in my book. i'd think a jump from 600 to 750 would be more sensible.
