I bought a Halibrand Champ quickchange and thought it was aluminum, but it looks like it has been painted and where the paint is flaking off, it looks dark like magnesium, are there any simple tests I can do to find out? It's a Culver City rear. Thanks.
the v8 culver city rears are aluminum.the open tube end bearing plates were magnesium but its possible for some of the v8 centers were cast in magnesium mike
Thanks for all the help guys, I tried licking and it does taste like chicken but can someone tell what aluminum takes like so I can compare Polisher-I'll try the vinegar trick, thanks.
Take a big oil barrel and drill some holes in the bottom. Fill with wood, coal, get the fire going and get it really hot. Place the quickchange in it. If the metal comes out the bottom, it was aluminium. If it burns like a bastard and melts the barrel, it was magnesium.
