More video. Ran it at the strip in Tucson last night. Not quite the right wheels/tires...I'm working on that. But it ran 11.01 first run ever, and 10.58 second run. And Tucson is usually at least half a second slower than other strips I've raced at (3000 ft elevation and it's hot)

another view, from my brother's phone

It was a fun night, my wife went with me, my brother and son showed up to watch and help.

I have a few problems I need to fix, like the oil spattering all over the windshield, and the tendency to drop oil pressure at 120 mph. But I'll get it figured out.

Awesome looking run. Keep us informed on the oil splattering issue. I have been trying different evacuation setups on my high compression big block race car without any luck.

thanks! It was a fun ride, I am still smiling

I'm working on the hood now. I think half of the stuff on the windshield was coolant, the other side got some oil. I may put a header evac setup on one side, plumbed to the fuel pump block off plate. I'm not sure yet. At least with the hood on the car, most of the **** will not get on the windshield ;)

What are you going to use to mount the hood? Pins all around or make something to mount the stock hinges too?

I'm going to try to make my own simple hinges, as far back and high up as I can. We'll see how it works out. Stock hinges mounted on the inner fenders, there are no inner fenders. And I have to be able to open the hood by myself, which is possible but a real pain if it only has pins holding it on.

WHAT ABOUT MAKING IT WHERE IT HINGES FOWARD. THAT MIGHT MAKE IT EASIER TO WORK ON?

Hinging forward won't work, as the hood would hit the rear carb.

Bottom of the hood, showing the bracing. It stiffened up even more after I tacked all the tubing together underneath. I started working on the hinges. Pretty simple. One pin is welded to the hood, the other is a bolt that I can remove to take off the hood. I've never seen one done like this, I hope it works.

Curious to see how you mount this to the fender. You just going to beef up that one inch drop on the fender? Or make some sort of entire different mounting point?

I did some play fitting of the hood yesterday, the hinge won't work as I had envisioned, because I didn't realize how high the center part of the hood is relative to the hinge pins--it moves back into the cowl, instead of up. So...I'm planning on making the hinge point be above the hood. It'll look kind of funky having exposed hinges, but I think it will work ok.

Love your car, you have done more in 6 months than I have in 6 years. Looks like it worked perfect in the videos. Do you think it might e.t. a little quicker with a little more converter? Nice job good luck at drag week.

I like the idea of 4 hood pins myself. I always did that on my stock cars and mounted 2 cheap Ace Hardware simple door handles so I could take it off myself in the pits.

It sure would. That's on the list of things to do if I want to go quicker, but give up some period correctness. The converter in it now is from the 60s.

  29. Jim, if you've still got a little time and want hidden hinges that will work with the bird catcher look into fabbing a pair of parallelogram hinges. I've built a few sets and they let the hinged panel move almost parallel to the surface it closes against for quite a distance. Start with cardboard and screws to mock up the geometry. It's really not as hard as it looks. Staggering the link lengths allow the open position to be any angle you want. Same principle as a stock hinge with infinite options.

That's a great idea! but I'm thinking the ugly exposed hinges will be fine for this car. I'll definitely think about it, though.
