Event Coverage How Are We doing?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Ryan, Jun 19, 2014.

  1. I'm getting used to it and I think most of the changes are pretty good.

One thing I do not like is if you click on a person's posts or profile you see everything they've posted, including within the group forums. Some of this stuff should be private. Someone was advertising a part in the classifieds so I clicked on his profile to see what else he may be selling and I could see his price negotiations with other buyers, their contact info etc. Not earth-shattering, but personally I think if it's not posted on the main board it shouldn't be available to the general public.

I have been trying. Really I have. I hit the post a pic box and nothing happens. Absolutely nothing. I am using Safari on a Mac. Everything is up to date. I tried using FireFox. That is worse. It starts to open iPhoto but freezes there. I can't select a pic and I can't close it out. I had to shut down the computer and restart.

No matter what, the HAMB is a special place to me. I've met a bunch of good people by being a member, learned an absolute ton, and enjoyed supporting the site. But, sadly, some of the allure feels lost. Maybe I'm just slow on acclimating to the changes (hell, I feel like I miss out on so much since the forum split since some threads or members just seem to have fallen off).

I don't feel the same as the malcontents whom gripe about it elsewhere but it bugs me that it comes up so much. Plus, in not feeling the same way they do the discussions are lessened. I'm tuned out after the first session of complaining. So, in a way, some changes impacted the real world - offline, and that's weird to me.

I've contemplated why some are so vehement about their feelings toward the HAMB and I think they can't handle the change(s) over the last few years. They make changes mean something more than they do.

Ryan, First off, how are You Doing ? I am doing Okay at almost 67 years of age. I left the Great American Work Force about 7 years ago due to a work related injury. In 1972, a motorcycle wreck left me cripple in my right leg. Other medical problems followed including heart bypass in 1998 and arterial bypass in 2007. Throw in herniated discs and you have a pretty good picture. Mobility is limited to say the least.
I try to work in the Garage when possible (33 Chevy Truck and 36 Chevy Standard Coach). I pulled my first wrench at about the age of 13. Over the years I managed to gain experience with mechanics, fabrication and welding and then upholstery. I guess you can say that I have been blessed........
My point is, When I can not motivate myself and get to the Garage, I spend a good bit of my time on the H.A.M.B. At least 3 to 4 hours a day, this is my Refuge....I have met and communicated with some very Good People here......(PM's now Conversations)
I have No Complaints !!! I simply wanted to say "THANKS" You have done a Great Job fielding all the questions and gripes since the "New Version" rolled out. This is the "Best Game in Town" as far as I am concerned and I will be here until my vacuum gauge reads "0" .
One Question, WTF is on schedule for tomorrow ??? Sincerely, Jeff Ray (33sporttruck)

  5. I am still trying to figure out the difference between the new posts that show up in "Alerts" and the new posts that show up in "watched threads". To me they should be the same; but they are different. I must be missing something.

...but, just perhaps, it is an age issue...For those 'younger' guys, you know, the ones who grew up using a 'computer machine', all of this techno-crap comes easy. For those of us who actually pre-date the hand held calculator, it is a bit harder, especially when we do not devote our lives to keeping up with the changing computer world. It really does not seem all that long ago when I had to sign up for 'computer time' in the college lab and then have my box full of IBM punch cards ready to go...yeah it might be an age issue.

  9. Unless old guys are incapable of reading and following instructions this is a cop out. There are numerous tutorials about how to find and do pretty much everything with this new format yet you still continually read how such and such a feature is no longer available. For a generation that seems to take pleasure in continually stating how lazy and unwilling to work for what they want the younger generation is there sure seems to be a bunch of lazy old farts on here that won't take the time to read and learn how the new format works. I am no computer whiz but I took the time to read the tutorials and now can find my way around this site with very few problems all it took was the willingness to try and not just throw my hands up in the air and say "I am old I can't do this"

is it just me? I can't get the audio on posted video links. (-tube, ect) Works everywhere else. Sorry if this has been answered already

  12. I will throw in my 2 cents, I am comfortable and enjoy the new format. I don't have any complaints, there may be some things that I am missing as I don't use all the features of the site. It did take a little hunting and reading the tutorials to figure things out, but nothing hard. I struggled with the pics initially, but I found it alot easier to get around and figure out than other places I have been.

I do not mind the white space and I have no problems with the font like some of the others are having. I do find that if I am spending many hours on the computer that I need to have the light on in the room as well, otherwise it will bother me. Maybe they just need to turn the light on instead of setting in the dark.

I don't have a mobile device, so no experience there, but on my laptop everything runs just fine. I was able to tell when you got it up to full speed. I am on W7 and use chrome if it matters at all.

I really enjoy the social forums and was glad when you got them back up and running. I don't have much to add to the main board and I was glad for a place to really get into. I know that they are a big resource suck, but I am glad they are there. I think it keeps the main boards on topic and I imagine it lessens the amount of BS you guys have to deal with as far as off topic threads and such.

I will also comment that if the white background is the biggest and most popular complaint you have, then you are doing just fine. With as many members that are on here, there are not alot of them percentage wise complaining.

Thanks for a place to come hang out and learn,

    Jason

Two thumbs up!! No issues. I especially like on the mobile app when you open a thread it goes to where you last viewed it. Keep up the good work!

No problems per se, but one feature I wish had been retained is the "view all" option for threads. I just like scrolling down a bunch instead of clicking on 20-500 pages of a thread.

    ...my, my, my...settle down.
I never said CAN'T. It is all about available time and understanding the vernacular. As I said, some of us don't live, breathe and think digitally, so major changes actually do become harder. If you have trouble with this concept ask your grand-dad for some input.
In the 'for-what-its-worth' department, the tutorial tab does not appear on all of the pages (like this one) so you actually have to know something about what you are attempting to do in order to actually do it....sometimes you don't know what it is that you don't know...

  17. Have you gone to the tutorial page and read the tutorials? It's listed right on the main HAMB page so there is no excuse for not being able to find them because of vernacular. If the answer is no then your arguments holds no water because you haven't put in the effort to try and learn old or young. If after reading through them you still can't figure stuff out then I might concede your point but I can guarantee the vast majority of people who post about stuff they don't like or can't find haven't read them because there is a tutorial for just about every issue that comes up.

sometimes when I click on a link like the "How do you preach the Gospel" (to see the rest of the story) a new tab opens, the computer acts dumb, and says 'page not found' I am running chrome and IE

'Main' page? The 'Home' page does NOT have the tutorial link nor does this page, where it might actually be useful. I'd offer 'screen shots' of what I have found but, hey, it's something I don't know how to do and really don't need to learn.
Yes, little grasshopper, I have read through several articles. Perhaps I am just old, lazy and stupid as you seem to think. I'm done, I have to go take a nap.

I think both of these changes are welcomed, at least by me. Much improved.

Another iPhone oddity. Looks fine in web page, but in app you see (Gallery=media, a number). Not earthshaking, just odd.

I have having a hard time posting, or starting a new thread using my galaxy s5. I cannot find the feature, but on my computer no problem. Help, I would like to use my phone to post pics and other stuff at car shows. Also when on my smart phone, when I click on a post to read it, it always brings me to the last page, Why?

  27. Click on the pencil that is on the banner at the top of the screen. It will give you a drop down list of prefixes to categorize your thread, click on the one you want, it will then allow you to start a new thread.

  28. I've not been on here too much in the past 3-4 months. Probably not enough to really weigh in, but.....

It's really gotten too big, too cumbersome, too much to navigate for me. I know the subgroups allow a person to focus on where their interests are but l liked the "old Hamb" better where I could see it all. Of course, now that it's so big, there's little chance of going back to that.
