Projects 55' Ford Power Steering Cylinder Rebuild

    Hey Guys, i'm new to this forum, so bear with me. i have a 1955 Ford Country Sedan, and im looking to rebuild the power steering cylinder. First, is it possible? and if someone who has done it, give me a few tips.. Thanks....

    WE always just bought the factory rebuilt cyls. Unless you have the I want to do it myself bug, I'd just get a rebuilt unit. Can it be done? probably but they always gave us problems so we went for the factory warranty.
     
  3. I'll comment on the odd system Ford used to re-center the steering on these. They used a rubber bushing in the idler arm that when you turned the bushing acted as a torsion spring (twisting the rubber) to pull the steering back to center. The problem is the aftermarket replacement bushing doesn't seem to last (or at least the ones I could find) and they're a real bear to replace unless you don't mind pulling the center link off the car every time you replace or have the special factory tool. If you can find one, MOOG used to make a 'improved' version of this bushing but it's been obsolete for years AFAIK. After going through three in a little over a year, I converted to manual steering... these really don't steer all that hard with manual.

    ive got manual steeing on a 62 galaxy and my 56 victoria.you wont wantt to parralel park with it **** otherwise it steers real nice after the front end has been rebuilt. i rebuilt both front suspensions (soup to nuts)!
