I plan to buy a aftermarket gauge set for my 64 F100 with an 87 F150 gas tank and sender. My question is what ohm range fuel gauge do I need and I have the old style speedometer cable, will I need something special to hook it up? I am doing this on a budget, so I want to get the best gauges at the cheapest (Mechanical) price.

The sending unit must match the gauge that you choose. Get the gauge and sending unit that matches at the same time and prevent a big h***le.

From what I googled , your 1987 sensor should be 22 ohms at empty and 145 ohms full
