Hey guys. i'd like to find some vintage speed equipment for my 54 plymouth flathead to dress it up a bit until i can afford to swap in an early hemi. i've read the "lets talk mopar flatheads" thread, but i was hoping some of you guys could point me in the right direction as far as actually locating components like split manifolds, finned heads, dual carb setups, etc.
i'd love to say i'm more experienced with flatty's but this is my first one, so any suggestions would be appreciated as well advice on things like which carbs would be the best, or anything else. thanks!

230057648218 Is the item number. It is for a 230, I am not sure if it will work on the earlier motor?

  8. If that D&S was made for the Chrysler Spitfire engine then it wont fit your flathead.

But I would honestly try to get your hands on this intake....

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/edmunds-dodge-plymouth-flathead-6-intake-2x2bbls_W0QQitemZ180058641504QQihZ008QQcategoryZ36474QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

    or try this one.....

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Edmunds-dual-intake-manifold-6cyl-flathead-Mopar_W0QQitemZ200055330737QQihZ010QQcategoryZ36474QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Both of these intakes are the same. They actually have two ports where you run your heater lines. It actually heats up your intake.

You can also get a Offenhauser, but you see those a lot.

The Edmunds intakes in the above auctions are rare and not reproduced.

2/2/07$From Summit racing, other than that there is not much. I would bet splitting the exhaust manifold would be easy enough.

I was thinking of replacing the babbit bearings with something newer and then relieving the block if that is possible. This way I could shave some compression from the head. But I have not dug into all this too much so i can't say it is even possible.

  11. You could split it, but you can buy a pair of dual exhaust manifolds from Phillips Proformance.

Im buying a pair from him. They look sweet!!

I wanted an AL head, but the Edgy is out of my pricerange. So I decided to just make my own. Hawkeye and I are developing a new aluminum head for the 230 that will also work on your 218. We're 6ish month from having the prototype ready.

Mopar flatheads DON'T need to relieved like the Fords do. You won't gain anything by it because the valves are already level with teh deck, not sunk like the Ford valves.

late mod. carter single barels off a pontiac. junk yard score two that matched had them re built they have a flat spot if ya git in to the trotle to hard. i think im going to change to singl barel hollys off of a slant six. i also built a set of headers for it

  15. I have a 230 in my '50 Dodge Wayfarer. Currently stock inside, with an Offy intake/dual '48 Plymouth Carter BB's, and a split stock exhaust manifold. Runs GREAT!!

I'm building a new motor for the car, with crossdrilled crank, balanced, .060" over, big cam, hopefully a conversion to full pressure filtering. I have an Edgy head for it, the Offy intake on the car now, and a choice of a stock distributor with an old drop in dual point conversion, or an NOS Mallory Magspark dual point.

I bought one NOS Saaty Meteor 100 injector, and would like to find a second, to try on there later. I still lack the transformer box for the Magspark, and a set of headers from either Langdon's or Phillips.

DMarv on here can get you an Offy intake. The Ball and Ball carbs you can run on it are pretty easy to locate on Ebay. I've got three of them shipped to me for a cost of less than 40 bucks including the purchase price. Rebuild kits for the carbs still available through Napa and easy to do.

Exhaust options- Langdons Stovebolt 6 has some really sweet looking headers for this but they are not cheap- about $325. Otherwise the stock manifold can be split for around $175 from RustedHope. IF you can't find their addess and you want it PM me.

Langdons also has an interesting HEI distributor available based on I believe a GM V6.

Lots of good stuff still out there- I'm working on my set-up over the Winter up here in MN...

Have fun with it-the Mopar stuff is a little "oddball" but everyone is into it has been really helpful and friendly to me during my build.

I've got to say though, I've seen Moose's work in person and it's VERY nice...if I ever get my 201 mopar flattie unstuck and in running condition he's the first one I'm calling for a manifold...

Don't bother with the 2x2 on Ebay--it fits the larger Chrysler/DeSoto block.

wow... just came across this clicked on this thread thinking..." hey, i'd like to see whats out there for mine." before realizing that i actually was the one who started this thread... in 06. lol

In answer to the question about what i found: i now am running a polished Fenton dual intake with carter 1bbls along with some cast split headers and some dual smitty's which sound great. I also ******ed up an old Mallory distributor and an equally old Mallory porcelain topped 6v coil.

Finned side covers are available on Ebay but i haven't picked them up yet.

In the shoulda woulda coulda department- i p***ed on a complete 230 out in IN that was built in the late fifties...so i'm sure it would have needed to be rebuilt by the looks of it... but it was full of vintage gold like a finned edmunds head, Tattersfield dual intake, fenton headers, and some other goodies. Unfortunately it was really rough shape and still in the car, and as rare as some of the speed equipment was, i didn't have it in the budget to give him anywhere close to what he wanted for it. Oh well... i'm sure it found a good home.

If anyone has spotted any goodies for these motors feel free to use this thread as a source! Might as well share the love of old mopar flatties!

Flatheads respond well to supercharging. In the thirties and fifties, quite a few flathead sixes and straight eights were built with centrifugal blowers including Auburn, Graham, and Kaiser (factory optional equipment).

I have seen Paxton blowers off Mustangs etc. on offer in the local Kijiji ads for $500 to $1500. Given the price of aluminum heads, reground cams, headers, manifolds etc. the supercharger can give you the same kick for less dough, and not kill your bottom end.
