Hey guys, Now I,ve got the '48 on the road. Rebuilt(professionally) the steering box, replaced the pitman bushings, orig front suspension is in good shape. Anything I can do to make the car handle better? You really have to fight it wandering, not pulling, just wandering... Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
If the entire front end is in good condition with no worn or damaged parts, then, after I made sure there was no issue with the tires, I would look at the caster and front to rear alignment. Too little caster can cause wandering. Not sure what the specs are for your car, but I'm thinking around 4 or 5 degrees positive caster.
I had a '48 sedan in High School in the '60s and I can say it taught me all I needed to know about rebuilding and aligning a front end. Skinny tires and crowned roads will cause it to wander and besides increasing the caster there isn't much you can do with the stock suspension.
Update: I did the alignment and the car drives like a dream now!!! Thank You HAMBers once again!! Mack Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Thanks Paul! Do you have any pics I could check out of that? Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
The car is long gone, so can't get pics. It's a common practice on the 40's chevs as the upper arm/shock went bad. Maybe someone else will chime in with pics. Paul
Like this? There,s a company called Cool Cars which sell the bits. These pics are not of my car, I would do the lower mount differently.
Paul55 & 36 roadster, thanks guys!! Pics are worth a million words to me. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
