Projects Looking for techs and "how to"s - making the tops of 33/34 coupe rear quarters.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 31Vicky with a hemi, Jul 6, 2014.

  1. I know I've seen them here but damn if I can find them again.
Probably buried in the jazilion build threads I've looked at.

If you have a link or a few that would be great.
    Thanks

I can't seem to find it at the moment, but Andy (thunderbirdesq) has a build thread where he cut up a Model 40 fordor sedan and built a nice hammered coupe. Pretty sure he had to build quarter tops as well.

  7. I did find it, A partial rear 1/4 top & the pics are off the thread but ****tered in his album.

I haven't seen it, but Mindover did a re-skin of a 34 coupe. I think he references a link to pics in some threads. Search his stuff.

i just built these for a 30 pontiac. same concept. you really don't need a deep throat shrinker... at all. some elastic stretching on a bag and even a cheap english wheel and you can make them. [IMG]

hit me up via pm if you want help on where to shrink/stretch..... you can also stump shrink this very very easy, no need for expensive machines. I have a pullmax style reciprocating with thumbnail dies and its just as fast to make with a mallet and stump/bag.

this is the harder way IMO. did this side all shrink. its faster to stretch. you can see the shrink riffles in the upper right pic. i'm a fan of the 50% shrink/50% stretch ratio for a panel like this. I get it done pretty quick manually now a days. this is when i thought shrink dies were the only way.

remember stretching the top of a curve is the same as shrinking the outside edge... you can get the same result from stretch or shrink. buy or borrow an english wheel, stretch the offending area on a bag and planish it out on a wheel. i can make a small test panel with step by step pics if you want tomrrow

You want to shrink to the right of the red line while stretching on the red line image.jpg
Hits from round 1, tucks not captured yet
    image.jpg
Tucks captured after about literally 3 minutes it really takes shape.
    image.jpg
Planished on the wheel after a few minutes. You lose shape on the wheel when wheeling the shrunk material

Repeat the process of stretching and shrinking until desired shape comes. It will seem like you've destroyed it many times in the process.

lol. my only point was that you don't need a deep throat shrinker to do what you want. You can do it with tucking forks even easier if you don't mind the parts having a slight surface imperfection at the end of the forks. A cheapy english wheel, even a HF one will be all you need to planish down the ruffle from hammering.

  17. So Here's my first attempt - With the first available suitable piece of 18 gauge for practice.
After About 30 mins of playing with it.
I was surprised at how quickly it took this shape. Problem or hard part is accuracy. Getting the movement wasn't hard to accomplish, having it end up in the right spot is another matter- :)
I suppose this piece is equivalent to landing in the "farmers county" but no where near hitting even just the broad side of his barn yet.
Trying to adjust the radius vertically doesn't seem to be working out so good for me.
I'll play with is some more adjusting where the bend starts and see what happens .

good job so far. you're on your way.

your best bet is to fill that area with foam, sculpt it into shape and pull a flexible shape pattern off of it. youtube flexible shape pattern.. its reversible, and ensures you get the same shape for both sides. once the shape is in the panel, you can set the arrangement with radius gauges that you can make off the foam model.

    best of luck.

  20. I had some time to fart around a little this afternoon. But I'll have all weekend to play and full sheet of 18ga.

I'm gonna try this in two pieces with the intent it's just for practice. Maybe I'll get lucky:)

I cut the blanks and wheeled them, then folded the trunk lip, then ran the edge thru the shrinker and the wheel some more. Figured I needed to cut 1-1/2 to zero off and tried again with the shrinker a little further into the sheet.

Also made some tucking forks and hollowed a dish in a stump.
    Wish me fun and luck

you got that.. just shrink the edges and stretch the peak of the radius with a mallet and bag. it'll appear faster than you think.
