GOing to rebuild two 97's for the merc. Never done it before, and am wondering if I should get the master rebiuld kit or just the regular one. Look at speedway catalog. I emailed the guy at 97 heaven, but never heard back from him. Look like the master kit comes with air bleed screw and jets.
I'd opt for the master kit. You're dealing with a 60-70 year old carb. Be sure to check out the jet size--a couple of my friends have picked up 97s at swap meets that they found out upon dis***embly had been alky carbs at some point, and had huge, hogged out main jets in them. Not the hot tip for gasoline!
I get the master kits. And save all your parts that are useable, clean them up and keep them in inventory as these carbs kind of grow on you, or at least they do on me. Started with one and have 7-8 and parts. I haven't been able to find a source for floats so take good care of yours. If you find a source let me know, I'd appreciate it. You probably already seen the thread on the stromberg rebuild guide at www.webrodder.com Part I and Part II, are great. There is also a stromberg parts list somewhere out there, I printed it but don't remember which site it came from. Good luck....31ACoupe
The little bit of extra money is worth it if you're just rebuilding a few for your own use. Buy the master kit. I rebuild over 100 Strombergs a year in my shop. Please email me or PM me if you have any questions AT ALL!! More often than not, these carbs have been "messed" with during their 70 year life and need more than just a kit to make them run correctly. There are also lots of p***ages that MUST be perfectly clean and so on and so forth.... Would be glad to offer any help I can and I also have tons of parts if you need them. Matt
Thanks for all the great advice as usual. One thing is there is a tube coming from the bottom of the bowl extending up just over the top plate. Looks like a vent tube. What is this and should I take it off?
Is it on the outside of the carb coming from the well plug? That's the part where the jet is. If so, it may be a float level indicator and a nice piece to have. Can you upload a picture? Matt
Does this tube screw onto the hole for the main jet with a banjo fitting? It is likely the better sort of kit for attaching a Southwind gas fired heater to the carb. Ford KRW fuel level gauges also attach so, and the Southwind part is a good start to making your own gauge. Upcoming Stromberg tip from future post preview: Speedway has a brake banjo fitting and matching 3/8 fine bolt that fits this aperture in a Stromberg--drill out p***ages in the thing, attach some maybe 1/2" clear tubing, and you can make the moral equivalent of a KRW gauge.
Hey, Matt, you might be just the guy we're looking for... I've got 3 97's that need some serious work. I don't have a parts sheet to know what is missing. Could I take some pics and get some advice and the parts I need? A rebuilding tech article would be really valuable to us virgin Stromberg boys. Thanks, himmelberg
I spoke with Charlice Price of Vintage Speed while at the Turkey Run. He's got everything you need to rebuild 'em. I picked up some oversize shafts to fix my "wobbly" ones. Hope they do the trick.
I don't do business with Charley anymore. Just looking for some other source of Stromberg parts. himmelberg
I've had nothing but good experience dealing with Charlie Price at Vintage Speed. Quick shipping and all.I don't know what the beef guys have is all about. Advise; make sure you have good emultion tubes or you'll be wasting alot of time.
Poorboy, Do Not, repeat Do Not try to rebuild the carbs yourself!! You should know by now by looking at other posts (CREASE) regarding 97 carbs that most of the guys agree that you should hire someone to do it because they are so complicated to rebuild plus you will need thousands of dollars in precision equipment to accomplish the task. Either send them out, buy a new four barrel, or sell your car and get out of this Hot Rod thing. Post parody not to be taken seriously.
Rudolph Faltermeier in South Carolina is the man to go to on a 97 rebuild. I have purchased 2 carbs from Rudolph and 1 from "ANOTHER" person. The "OTHER" carb turned out to have 2 stripped screws on the air horn. If the carb cost what Rudolph charges, it would have been more acceptable. Unfortunately, I had upwards of $250 in it. The person that ***embled it obviously knew that the threads were jacked up. Rudolph does great work and he's very reasonable. I've sent a bunch of folks his way and never had a complaint. I dont have his number on me, but I've posted it here before.
Hotrodjosh(97HEAVEN) is having internet probs. Email or PM me your phone#. He'll call you ASAP.He's got everything you need including advise & the HAMB discount.
poorboy...Gordy Teschendorf in Milwaukee, Wi...(414) 546-2867...this guy knows his carbs better than anybody I've ever seen...he rebuilt my 6 97's....he's about 70 years old, and can rebuild them strombergs in his sleep....he's cheap and he's fast too
