Having a problem getting rebuilt 4 banger to start. Has roller rockers, 30 over bore, mercruiser head, and 2 94's on custom made intake and equal length exhaust headers. Pulled timing cover and marks on cam and crank are lined up correctly. Timing set at tdc and no 1 plug fires perfectly. 2-3-4 plugs fire accordingly. Pulled head to check gasket and it was fine and put new gasket. Has stock mercruiser cam. Carbs were part of the problem initially and turned off gas and blew out cylinders and plugs to elminate flooding. Poured small amount of gas in carbs with no luck then some starting fluid with no luck Engine is tight but have 3 horse starter and battery charger with boost in it. Seems to spin enough to fire. Have had some of what I think were some sharp people (including a mechanical engineer) try their best to get this thing running. All of them walked away shaking their heads. Will try anything including selling this *****. Need help in Tampa.
Too much fuel like that can ruin the spark plugs, even if they do show a spark out of the engine it may not spark under compression. For what they are worth try a new set. I had the same thing happen to me on a Honda 4.
Also if you have flooded it you probably have washed the cylinders down. Try squirting a little oil in the cylinders to get the rings to seal back up.
What are you running for ignition. I have a 10:1+.060 153 in my track roadster with 2 side draft webers. The mixture was so rich a normal coil and points distributor would hardly get it to bark. I switched an MSD -6A box and their coil, stayed with my dizzy, and it fired right up and was actually lean then. Just a thought. Charlie
i agree with gas fouled plugs, fought this on a SMC, drove me nutz, till a old guy told me about gas foulded plugs . Changed them out , fired right up.
Run a compression test to make sure the Merc head chambers are not too big. Also ckeck the cam rotation.
Or you can just reach over and crank it up like I did the other day <EMBED height=390 type=application/x-shockwave-flash width=640 src=http://www.youtube.com/v/Hbddw7jRRAg?version=3 allowScriptAccess="always" allowfullscreen="true">
Maybe I'm missunderstanding what you said about the distributor wire hookup. It is cold and damp out side but I went out to check the firing order and it is 1-3-4-2. Sorry if I didn't understand what you were saying but hope this helps if you were trying 1-2-3-4 firing order. ****
