had my original air cleaners chrome plated, the center mesh appears to be stainless, the outer mesh i sandblasted and painted red to match the engine. my question is what is available to replace the "horsehair" looking filter material, the stuff is shedding and i don't want it getting ****ed into the motor. what have you done?

They make a gutter filter material that would work. Not sure if I have any left. I will check.

I went to the local hardware store and bought furnace filters. I cut and stacked till I had a good amount that I thought would filter OK and not block the air flow. The better grade filters are denser material so stay away from the .99 cent ones.

i buy the green "universal" filters sold at homecheapo for my dust filters in my shop, but they have quite a bit of spacing between the fibers. is that what your referring to?

Get prefilter material in the home and garden section of Lowe's, Home Depot, or Ace hardware. Cut it to size, works great.

Check out an RV place. They sell open cell foam in sheets for the air intake in the A/C units. May have to do several layers. What I've seen isn't real thick.

On a side note, I don't think I've ever used 'sell & 'cell' in the same sentence in my life. Kinda freaky...

I'd lean toward the open cell foam. Some of that furnace filter type stuff is spun fibergl***, and bits of that breaking off and going through the engine can't be good. You wouldn't throw gl***-beading media down the carb, would you?

Buy two K & N reusable filters that are the right diameter and then bend to fit or flatten a little in a vice.

Is this for the pre-cleaner part of a oil bath? Or the actual filter? Any of the suggestions would work just fine for the oil bath, but I'd cut down something from a modern filter it that is the only filter.

  16. That filter set up looks pretty damn cool!!!

    Here's what I'd do.
Get your height needed and general radius requirements and head to the parts store. Find a cheap 2 that fit the required dimensions. And cut them to fit like the lids. Write the part #s down and worry about it again when they get dirty.

i like these thoughts....i think there is a brand new large diameter k&n filter in my stock pile. i will measure tomorrow and see if it can be cut in two. they are washable [like the original] so buying another won't be an issue.
then again the foam would be washable also.

thanks, thats why i went through the expense of chrome plating them. i took them off the car when i switched to a single four barrel back in 1979 and hung on to them.
good info, the black stuff says only for a prefilter so i could even use a paper element on the inside.
i don't think they are made anymore and i have no idea who made them. i do have a single four barrel version.

Very cool air cleaners. I think they were made to fit the 57 270 HP Corvette engine. I buy used reusable air cleaners just for the filter material. Cut the material into strips and stack them up until they fit. clean them and then oil them and instal. They make the reusable A/Cs media in different colors. The newer model A/Cs are often flat and lay in the air stream. A lot easier to cut into strips for custom installations. Old air cleaners with modern HP filter material. What's not to like? I looked for several years to find those dual quad air cleaners to no avail. They are cool enough to me to build a car around.

    thanks for the source.
house A/C units? is it the stuff Mallomike posted?
i tried to google search info on the dual filters, i couldn't even find a picture of them. originally the outer mesh was chromed, but the single air cleaner i had, had that rusty haze look to it so i painted it. i liked the contrast so these were rusty also so i painted them too.
