I was messing around out in the garage tonight and was thinking about polishing the buick turbo 400 I have in my model a coupe. Has anyone done this? Any pictures?

Seen it done mainly on show cars, some 'street rods'...like anyone was gonna see it without the floor mirrors... Couple of the purveyors of specialty parts used to display polished 350 & 400 cases to demonstrate B&M and Locar shifters, at goodguise events.
Sand buggies with V8s and auto trannies used to polish them, but they were highly visible.
Some guys polish engine blocks & heads, polishing the******* just seems to follow.
Lots nicer than rough cast aluminum, but other guys paint 'em.
Plan on more than an occasional 'wipe'. (I HATE cleaning my scavengers on my F100)

Way too much effort for a totally hidden part.

I get that nobody would see it but it'd just be one of those things in the pride of the build category I guess.. Nobody see's it but I'd know it was done. Idk.. This is where I got after 45 min of work

"HEY! Pay those guys no mind. I had my gas tank sending unit GOLD plated and I sleep good EVERY night! POLISH that trans case. We'll know it's there. That's all that matters."

You worked on it for 45 minutes, THEN asked for motivation? C'mon.....

I did it on my 727 on an O/t car. Twas before the digital photo era so I have no pics. I Know nobody ever sees it but I think it's cool. Of course I had the trans sitting on the bench at the time anyway with a few hours to kill so what the hell.

We were just talking about this the other night, we haven't polished one, but we have ground and hand sanded them smooth and then sprayed them with Imron. All that work and you never see one inch of them once the body is on ! But at least it looks good for the "in progress" photos we post on the HAMB ! ;)

Go ahead and do it, at least YOU will know it is down there.

Every time a transmission gets all gussied up, a hot rod angel earns it's wings.:D

I can see where you'd make a lot of progress on the smooth part shown in your photo, but when it's time to get down to polishing the nooks and crannies your time spent will increase exponentially. From what I see, you've done a small bit of the easy part. For me, not worth the effort. If I had to choose between polishing a transmission that nobody would ever see or sit with my wife and endure watching a couple of gay boys remodel a pink house on HGTV, I think I'd lean towards watching some television.

I've seen them polished, powder coated, and painted. Polishing is by far the most work especially when you start getting into the little nooks and crannies

Pointless, but its your time. If it makes you feel good do it and post pics.

  18. This thread reminds me of a conversation I had with my sister-in-law. She was telling about a naughty underwear party she had been to and I asked her why she went. (no boyfriend, no prospects) She asked me if I wrapped Christmas presents in plain brown paper, I got her point.
I wouldn't polish a trans for love or money, but I will let you do it if you wish! (I might prep and paint)
I saw a 6 cylinder Jag head and cam covers polished and that was one of the more impressive engine dress-ups I've ever seen!

Start by removing the mold parting lines and other obvious extra rough areas. If you still have some ambition left, start sanding. Switch to a finer and finer grit. If you run out of ambition, paint it, and it will look great. If you are not running out of ambition, switch to some polishing compounds and keep going. It is best to do this in short sessions over a period of time.

If the above looks like too much work, go in the house, and turn on the TV.

The kind of guy that polishes a transmission doesn't get motivated by others. That kind of stuff comes from within.

I would suggest you put it in the car and make sure it works before you go through all the hard work.
But if the case was bad it sure would look good setting on the bench.

I like to just clean them up, and give them a decent paint job. But I'm too lazy, so I'd rather spend my time on things that show, or go.

Clean it, paint it and use the time saved on your next project. Uh.....you do have one, right?

I'm old and I don't have enough time left to even consider polishing a transmission.

I've been trying to clean this one for paint and it*****s! Only reason I'm doing a decent job getting it cleaned is because I want to be able to track down leaks. If I ever go insane and actually smooth one completely, whatever car it would be going in would be getting a glass floor so everyone can see the damn thing.

Several years ago after a shoulder surgery, I spent a little time smoothing and doing a light polish job on my 350 turbo. No real reason other than it was the only thing I was able to do given the circumstances.

Someone pointed out correctly that u had only worked on the easy part . That being said , screw all the naysayers !!! It's yours , polish it !!! I know how hard it is cause I do it for a living !! If you finish it you will b twice the man that any of the crybabies that told u it was too hard or ur dumb for thinking about it ! Gd luck and hang in there if u try it ! It's gonna get reallllly ugly before it's finished. If u need any advice pm me I'll point u in the right direction . How's that for motivation ?
