One of my friends had one in his 29 Roadster. They work well. He didn't have a lot of leg room though.

It is a cheap and easy way to recess the firewall and you can make a plywood bed for the wheelbarrow to tote stuff around so that part isn't lost.

I've seen several done like that in the sixties, mostly to 55 chevy g***ers...didn't look too bad on a large car, however on a model A, you may just be able to reverse the firewall...

Its not a model a... but a chevy, moved mine back 4 inches using the original firewall. I just cut it at the seam and then built a 4 inch sleeve while it was on the table and then welded it back in...ghost

  5. Don't have a pic, but have seen it several times. A couple of times very well, just do it as shallow as possible, not much room in that Model A already.

I have one in my 34 Plymouth sedan. It looks good and provides the extra room needed for the SBC and TH400. It does reduce interior space, mostly behind the dash where it is tight for things like the sound system and the evaporator. Floor space, particularly around the accelerator is lost also, but not difficult to drive. I don't have any pictures now but will see if I can get one and post it. Most people don't seem to have a clue as to what they were looking at when they look at the firewall.:D

how does the 389 compare in size to the 460? dont forget the huge timing cover and water pump that push the fan out further.

this is a 29. i dont think the firewall will recess as much as a 30/31 when reversed. correct me if im wrong.

    nice idea. got a pic?

*barrow* a friend of mine used on on a duece, and it looks great. not much leg room though. of course theres never much legroom in a hotrod so that point is kinda moot

  16. We used one in a 40 ford panel and I can't even begin to remember how many 53-56 ford pick ups have them because of my dad. It's getting hard to find wheel barrels that are thick enough anymore.

  18. My 57 Belair has a yardworks wheel barrow for a firewall. I set the engine back about 4 inches and had to do that for it to fit. Actually looks pretty good! You can,t tell what it is.....

I thought about going that way to, but didn't want to loose very much leg/floor/firewall space so I messaged the firewall and brought the toe board up to meet the recess.

I mounted the flatty low in the ch***is and don't have any hump in the floor.

You need the contractors variety to get a good thick one.

If you just flip the firewall around in my 30 A coupe is there any mods needed to the original gas tank?? or will it still clear the tank?? Thanks- Jimmy

When I was just getting into hot rods, I remember reading about using a wheel barrow for an engine set back, in an issue of 'Rod Action". That would be an issue from the mid 70's. I remember it appeared to work like a charm.

BUT, if you've ever been to a well stocked gardening store, you've noticed that wheel barrows have morphed into all sorts of sizes and materials. I'd take some measurements and start looking. It's been done with obvious success.

I saw one used as a hood blister for a V8 swapped into an OT car for top eng clearance. Looked real good yet familiar, had me guessing until the builder told me what he used.
