Hot Rods Another Stewart Warner Question

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 1oldtimer, Jul 15, 2014.

  1. I don't think this tach uses a box, but can this style be converted to electronic with the new board inside. I've seen the post about mating a new tach to the old tach, but I'm not sure I want to go that route. BTW any guesses on the era?.

That tach is run by a unit under the distributor cap and it is from the 50's or 60's. You could use the face and needle on a later tach. Gary

  3. With the size and the style of plug I thought it might be older.....maybe 40's?

Not older with the 8000 rpm scale. I can send you pics of a complete system if you want. Gary

I have converted one by ****canning everything but the inner body, dial and needle. Mount a modern tach inside and swap the needle. No it won't read accurately but how many of us really need an accurate tach anyway? I shift by ear anyway. It moves when the engine is reved that's all I really need. Be honest do you really look at the tach when on the street? I don't.

  6. Makes sense, I have seen the ones that just have the Stewart Warner in script on the front that are 4500 max. But with the motor I'm running I needed something closer to 7k.

The winged logo was commonly used on the face of gauges from 1948 to 1954.
