    Now isn't this precious!

update, CNET News.com column on Monday--
It is now illegal, after President Bush signed H.R. 3402, the "Violence Against Women and Department of Justice Reauthorization Act of 2005," to harr*** someone by posting an anonymous comment on their blog.
Figuring out exactly what Congress did takes a few minutes. But it's not too difficult.

First, go to the text of the legislation and search for Sec. 113. Note how Sec. 113. amends existing law by changing the definitions in 47 U.S.C. 223(h)(1).

Before the new law took effect last Thursday, 47 U.S.C. 223 explicitly said it "does not include an interactive computer service." The changes override that for the "to annoy" section and now say it applies to the "Internet."

Q: So what does the rewritten law now say?
The section as amended reads like this: "Whoever...utilizes any device or software that can be used to originate telecommunications or other types of communications that are transmitted, in whole or in part, by the Internet... without disclosing his iden***y and with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten, or har*** any person...who receives the communications...shall be fined under ***le 18 or imprisoned not more than two years, or both."

You cant stalk little girls anonamously anymore?

I dont see why you would care that you cant go onto someone elses "look at me!" page and annoy them without disclosing who you are. That is if I am interpreting this law correnctly.

It relates to the forum that we are all using. If you think it should be removed, that is fine with me, but we have to be aware of what is affecting the systems that we use.

I just read hotrod1940's bio...my time on this planet pales in his shadow...however, I echo Leviscl***ic's sentiments: "This relates to traditional "hot rods how?"

This is a traditional hot rod forum...this forum has nothing to do with annoying people (well, maybe a bit of drama sometimes), nor blogs...

Hotrod1940's post is political in content...something prohibited here...and I'd bet even Ryan will tell you and him that...

actualy, it can apply here ... technicly speaking

what if i said "dude, thats a stupid color you painted your car"

if it annoys you, im breaking the law if i dont say my full name (nicholas trawinski)

but i dont expect it to cause any real trouble for any of us, because in all reality, i could mock someone on the street and not have to give them my name first .... i could stand thre at a car show and verbaly slam you and your car just cause i feel like being a ****, and im not breaking any laws, so theres no reason to expect an email saying the same thing would be "unlawfull" enough for me to get find or jailed for it

  9. I have come to respect all of the people that have posted so far however I must disagree that this has no place on the HAMB. I have seen a bunch of post on this pboard that were not hotrod related and they typically start with O/T.

giving away a shop dog is about as relavant as this post ( I see nothing wrong with either). I also disagree that this is political. There is no bashing of a particular party or person. I feel it is informative and fair and balanced.

Thank you for the information (although if I post on a site I usually leave my calling card) this doesn't pertain to me but it is good info anyway.

The problem with laws like this, laws that tread on your civil liberties & the reason that "if you are not doing anything wrong you don't have to worry" is that it removes the protection we USED to have & instead forces people to rely on the benevolence ,or lack of, of those inforcing the laws. I for one do not feel very secure having to hope whoever is in charge is a " Good Guy" & means no one any harm . Or has no Ax to grind --cause IF he does -----------??????

No I don't think that changed the post a bit. It's just kind of scary that you have watch what you say on any forum, because of a federal law.
if one says something distasteful to the forum , there has always been recouse , delete or ban the offender . Should be enough.

  14. Well toehr than the fact that yoyu know me if you were a chick and I said"Phttt:p" to you right now seeing as my legal name isn'y Pknbner:D then I would be liable for harraseing you.

    Uh, I think.

Before all you worry warts go balistic H.R. 3402 is just an appropriations bill. Funding for the Act in other words. Instead of hanging this on GWB, look where it came from and who voted for it in the first place. Chances are if W veto'd it he would have caught hell for not supporting stiffer crimes against women, blah blah, blah. The House would overide it quite handily anyway.

As one of the 10 guys involved in the HRI legal stuff, I gotta say that any law like this that tries to apply normal legal rules to the internet is something to watch.

The definition of "harasment" is even more vague than the definition of defamation.

This seems to mean that any time a woman feels "harr***ed" by a comment some one makes about her on the internet ........ it's lawyer time.

the thing i miss about new orleans(besides the food) is napoleanic law.
also known as a tort state.
if you piss somebody off enough you get popped in the mouth just like the old days. there ain't a legal thing you can do about it either.
