hey there people, I'm still learning my way around so please be patience, I picked up a 5 bolt housing transmission to match up with my 5 bolt 289,now here's the dumb question, what trans do I have? there is no tag on it,where and what am I looking for on it to help ID it. I want to sell everything and want to make sure I know how to describe it Thanks,Sam. I got a real good deal on these back a few years ago and then decided I'm gonna redo a 302 for my 65 fairlane when that 289 needs work done,
Thanks for replying, I don't have the chance to post pics today sorry, I did take a look at it and found this out 1. 2pc unit, tail housing an main body 2. 14 pan bolt pattern like the med case c.o.m but the shape of the pan doesn't match 3. # C2OP-7006-D on the main body 4. C2OP-404-D on the tail 5. found a tag (covered in grease) PCNB 221 2K19C4 seen C4 here an thought ok thats it but pan bolts don't match up I tried searching these numbers and didn't find anything conclusive 6. the fill tube connects to the case just above where pan bolts on. Thanks
The C2 casting number could be a clue, as in maybe it came from a 221 and it could be a 2 speed fordomatic. Same 5 bolt pattern as 260, early 289.
that's my guess, Ford O Matic 2 speed. Aluminum main case with integral bellhousing, removable tail housing, looks like this when you take it apart btw I thought you had a manual transmission, your first description was so vague! The details really help
Likely your transmission is a a two speed Fordomatic. The C4 debut in in 64 in Fairlanes and other similar cars. Although it was a C4, Ford called it a Cruisomatic Since it was a 3speed. These early C-4s are called dual range or green dot C-4s today because of the early 60s Ford shift pattern. You can start out in second in a early c-4. The true Cruisomatics will have a iron main body. The Ford C-3 and 5 are later 70s and 80s transmissions. The C-3 was light duty, the c-5 was a lockup c-4.
Thanks Choffman41,it is the 2peed fordomatic I found some pics of it on line and everything looks the same. Thanks to everyone who responded, Sam
Sorry so vague in my first post but to be honest I really didn't know if it was an auto or manual, boy that doesn't look good for me lol. transmissions obviously ain't one of my good points,( long story about subject way back then)
5. found a tag (covered in grease) PCNB 221 2K19C4 seen C4 here an thought ok thats it but pan bolts don't match up This is just a guess but I am going to guess that you have a C4, they were a 3 speed auto first produced in 1964.
thanks for the input but with help from others it is the FM2 trans, at first I thought it was the C4 because of the 14 bolt pan but the shape is different,I wish it was the C4 instead,oh well some one somewhere will want it.
another clue is the C2xx part numbers on the parts. The ford numbering system is really neat, you can tell what year a part was first used by the part number. C2 is 1962, C4 is 1964. You won't find a C4 transmission from a car older than a 1964 model. bonus points if you can figure out what year the C6 transmission was first used
I was thinking that was odd, but that came out of a Ford parts book. It clearly said 221 and 6 cyl. behind it. They were scanned copies so the 6 may have at one time been an 8
ford introduced the C6 for high torque applications in 1966,it's basically the C4 only on a larger scale for heavy duty use.
