Alternatives to "upol reface" but similar

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 31Vicky with a hemi, Oct 3, 2013.

  1. Looking for opinions from guys who have actually used both - reface and something similar. I'd like to hear comparison stories and experiences.

I like reface, but looking to try something else.
    Thanks.

Maybe I'm losing it (memory) after over fifty years in hot rodding, but....HELP!!

  4. It's a spray able polyester filler, an expensive one too.

Have used Evercoat Slick Sand before.... used this on one of my OT cars I painted black.....works good, and I found it blocks well...

However, I'm not a pro bodyman, just a schmuck in a garage that likes paint and exhaust fumes, so what do I know... :)

You might try Evercoat's Superbuild. It is a 4:1 mix polyester primer (two catalyst speeds) that has double the build per coat of reface.

  8. Another vote for slick sand.

K13.......how does the Superbuild spray out, sand and what tip did you use?

I'm a diehard Evercoat fan, found almost all of their products I tend to like once I use them, but have not used the Superbuild product...

I sprayed it with a 3.0 tip (my next smallest was a 1.8 which would have been too small)and it sprayed out nice. You could definitely go with a smaller tip. oldrelics on here sprayed some with a 2.5 and he said it sprayed nicely with that. Sands pretty easy as well.

Here are a couple of pictures. It is hard to tell from them but it is a pretty texture free surface.

I've used Evercoat when I was in the US : loved it. Since I'm in France I can't get their products, so I used U-Pol for a while : I hate their stuff ... I moved to some other brand now, better than U-Pol but not as good as Evercoat.
    I'm partial to Evercoat.

U-Pol Reface will give you good results but I've found myself using Evercoat Slick sand as it seems easier to find and easier on the wallet. I'm a fan of either product due to the minimal shrink back compared to a urethane.

Not sure what ''easier on the wallet'' means. I've paid $100 for a gallon of Slicksand here in the east bay (northern Calif) recently. Kind of hard to find also. Sprayed with a 2.2 tip. Dave

i have used rust defender in the past; it worked well and a couple weeks ago i sanded and painted over a product called "rust bullet" that was sprayed by another shop. they both blocked out well.

reface an slicksand i think are pretty compareable. i like evercoats overall line better and it's in more local places though u pol has shown up in a coupla new places lately. probably my favorite u-pol product so far is the raptor bedliner. and i think they have a new slightly lower priced liner out to.

thats superbuild sounds interesting. may have to look at that next time i'm i the paint store. haven't looked in a while but i wonder is SPI has a product like reface and slicksand?

I've used Clausen Z-Chrome with good results. Don't know how it compares price wise though.

If you're going to go right over a self-etch primer I would recommend Evercoat G2 Featherfill. Shoot it with a 2.0(ish) tip and it lays done heavy enough for good build and will sand nice. Best part is you can just respray any small areas that need additional filler, break-thrus or low spots and keep on truckin'. A bit spendy but it can eliminate extra material and steps that ultimately cost you additional funds. Top coat friendly as well.
