How is the linkage disconnected from the gas pedal on a '56 Fairlane? I'd like to disconnect the linkage without removing the pedal from the car if possible.
The pivot that attaches to the firewall has a curved rod on the lower end that goes through the firewall to meet up with the back of the accelerator at the top. If memory serves, the way that this attaches to the rear of the pedal is that it is a rubber on metal friction fit. I believe the end of the curved rod through the firewall has a mushroom shape that "snaps" into a rubber boss on the back of the pedal. You should be able to pull the top of the pedal off of that mushroom shaped end. The bottom of the pedal is screwed down to the floor of course. If your accelerator pedal has never been replaced then odds are that the rubber boss will break off. I would suggest spraying the rear of the pedal with some penetrant or at least taking a small oil squirt can to help it out. I am away from the car right now... maybe someone else can chime in to confirm all of that.
I kind of figured the process went as danman described. I'll have to soak the boss for a while as I'm dealing with rock hard original rubber. Thanks all.
