I am in the middle of spending a bunch of money to rebuild a 40 banjo rear. I am cheap and it hurts. I have several Maverick rears. I know Ford wires will bolt up and clear the drums with some wheel adapters I have. Here is the wet dream. Convert the Maverick to closed drive. Take off the bearing retainer but use the yoke and U joint. Make a new bearing retainer that will allow a Ford torque tube to bolt up. Get a driveshaft made that goes from the Ford U joint to the 39 box U joint. Put a slight bend in the torque tube flange so the rear joint needles turn. use 32-34 radius rods. What do you think? Only problem I see is the Maverick U joint may not go in a torque tube. The tube could have a larger dia. tube spliced in for clearance.
I know about open drive 39 box conversions. I am using a stock 32 frame and that will not work. I would weld on hangers to fit a 32 rear curved spring.
I would ask why ? But I probably know the answer. Convert to open drive and be done with it. Much easier
Could it be done?anythings possible ,but I would think the cost involved would be counterproductive. HRP
Gears, bearings, seals, and resleeving the axle bells will run $800. I can do it all but making the driveshaft. I can have a stronger better geared rear.
