Hi , just wondering if there was anyone on here that could haul a car out of Port Jefferson , Long Island to Elk Grove , Illinois urgently with delivery by the 12th August .. Thank you Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
That's an 876 mile one way run. For the regular Hamb haulers it would depend on if one of them was in the area. Any other guy with a truck and trailer would have to figure out what to charge you to make it worth his time along with fuel and other trip related expenses such as motel costs. Any one who considers hauling it will want to know if it starts and runs well enough to drive up on a trailer and possibly drive to the parked trailer as some places won't let you pull inside with a truck and trailer. If it has to be winched on a trailer or loaded with a fork lift that is another issue to face.
When you get to the Hamb o'dex, look up BenD. He does a nice job moving the old tin. Maybe he'll be interested.
Give skipperman on here a PM, he knows people who do a good job. I got my '59 Ford moved from Denver to LI in 50 hours.
In the HAMB O'dex there is a guy named Bill. I believe he runs Bill's auto transport. The thread is titled "nationwide single car transport" or something like that. He Has tons of people on the HAMB who vouch for him. He did a fantastic job towing my 54 Ford about 500 miles and gave me a great price. No complaints whatsoever. Make sure you use someone who is on here with lots of good reviews. I had a couple bad experiences using random companies I found in Hemmings. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Avoid the brokers if at all possible. Some of the HAMB transporter don't go out to LI, but it doesn't hurt to ask. The one I got last week cost the driver $61 in tolls and took him 3 hours from the GW to Suffolk.
Thats a real short time frame, going to be hard to get anyone that can do it. Most of these guys are booked , if you need it that fast you may be money and time ahead to get/rent a truck and trailer and go your self.
I almost did this myself, but would have run me big $$ with renting a trailer and truck plus life on the road for 3 days. The fuse on any car pick up is at best 4-5 days.
Yes, the NYC area is the most inhospitable place I have ever driven and I have driven in most major US cities, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, Phoenix, just to name a few. I have been to Long Island four times, always towing a trailer, and the tolls are outrageous on some bridges, Verrazano Narrows being the worst, in my experience. When I was last there, Throg's Neck was my exit route and was the least expensive toll I encountered. When I first read this post, I considered offering to do the job. I calculated my known direct costs and estimated the variables. But on further consideration, decided the hassle of the Northeast wasn't worth the potential "fun factor" such an adventure can provide.
You have to hit NYC just right or else you wind up in a world of shit. My driver drove head-on into Cross Bronx Expressway rush hour. The WORST 5-mile stretch of road anywhere. My son recently crossed the Verrazano (Guinea Gangplank....) in a cube van, the toll was $35. That and the GW get you one-way. The Throgs Neck and Whitestone, double penetration.
Was going to suggest the same, or fly in/drive out, but the o/p is in Australia. Location of the car and time frame are huge enemies here. Is the car road worthy enough to make the long trip? If so, possibly consider a driver service rather than hauler.
Thanks for the recommendation Demonspeed, hope you are enjoying the 54'. I think I can speak for the other two quality transporters here on the Hamb (BenD & Racinman) when I say, none of us go to NYC or Long Island & we are all booked well in advance. As of today I have at least a dozen on the schedule.
Look in Hemming's -there's quite a list of haulers-look for recommendations and insurance/bonding. As for my money, there's no better hauler than Bill's Auto Works.. Hi, Bill.
if you need it done quick, you better find a GOOD broker to get the load posted and to perform the background checks. NYC is going to be the biggest hurdle...
Long Island is the worst place in the USA to ship from. I live about 125 miles away. It is a 4 hour ride at best. 2 hours to get to NYC 2 hours to get the next 25 miles.
I have shipped over 100 vehicles with my broker. She takes great care of me, my customers and their new vehicle.
Just want to thank all the HAMB members and especially Skipperman for all your help on hauling this car , it's was picked up today and is now on its way.. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Now, consider, not having EasyPass. Much more expensive to pay cash at the Cash Lanes are always on the side away from where you are. Crossing with EP is kinda like going for free ('til the bill comes.)
I've has Easy Pass for years now. Every once in a while I get this feeling like an invisible hand is in my pocket though... it comes out of my checking at $50 a clip, although you can set it up to do any amount.
Dropped off on Long Island, NY .... Picked up in Brooklyn, NY .... Dropped off on Staten Island, NY .... Jim
