Good evening fellow hot rodders, I have a 1951 Chevy Custom. I am running a Ford 9 at the rear, my left drum has started rubbing and getting hot. I plan to do a complete brake job at this point including the wheel cylinders. At this time all I know is the rear end is a Ford 9 out off a car. is there any set of numbers I can run or cross reference to get a year for shoe size and additional hardware. I have done some research based off internet and could only find limited information. All advise and or experience is highly appreciated.

Sometimes they still have the tag on one of the nuts that holds in the center section, but usually it's gone by now. If so, remove the tag and post a picture of it and we might be able to help figure it out. If not, post some pictures of the whole rearend, front and back, and the front and back sides of the brakes, and measure the shoes, both diameter and width. Also pics of the axles where the wheel bolts on. There are a lot of clues in "how it looks" that can't be explained, but someone knowledgeable can guess pretty close by looking at it.

Measure the brake drum's diameter & brake shoe width. With that info I can track down the years it was available along with the wheel cylinders.

  5. Make sure the drum isn't rubbing due to axle bearing failure. The axle will have excess clearance in the rollers, which allows the axle to drop the drum onto the shoes.
This just happened to my friend's hot rod pickup yesterday!

pull off a wheel and brake drum, and show us the brakes...and measure the shoes. Looks like an early housing, late 50s/early 60s. Probably 11x2 shoes?

Digressing slightly, that pinion angle appears to be down and not up or is it the photo? Could be angle of lower triangulated 4 bar?

    Jim,

that's how I felt last week on a thread we both posted on, when my brain took a short leave of absence, and I misquoted a year range that I knew better.

Today is your turn in the barrel :D

  14. Looks kinda like that oddball 9 3/8" pumpkin with the turned down top rib showing in his photo.

It's definitely an 8" rear. They were produced from the early 60s to the late 70s, iirc. could be a few different sizes of brakes, but probably 10x2 or 2-1/4

Hey I am back, I have been super busy with my job. Any way moving forward I was able to get to my rear end over today. For starters my self adjusting screw spring busted and wheel cylinder is leaking. Not big on rears I did some cross referencing on the brakes shoe numbers at my local Napa store what came up was to a 1966 mustang.... The drum measures at 10X1 3/4.
