Hello fellow HAMBERS, I'm almost ready for paint and thought about putting on side view mirrors. I do have the peep ones that came with the car but I'm not keen on using them again ( looks cheap) . Do you guys have a favorite that you like and or use. I was thinking about the '61 T-Bird. The car is a mild custom nothing crazy.
I plan on using one of these (or something similar) to replace the current side mirror on mine (which blocks my vent window from opening all the way up) http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Gasket-8218G-Stainless-Mirror/dp/B003TEQU0I
When I got my 56, the mirrors were on the fenders so all I could see was the side of the car. I put stock mirrors on the doors, I just made sure the wings would open.
Why is it everytime I look at mirrors and find something I absolutly love, they end up being rare vintage mirrors selling for 4-600. a pair? It's been a difficult selection for me. I want something round and graceful, and without a bowtie emblem.
Oddly enough, I found a pair on Ebay I may be able to live with. At any point, they were cheap enough to order and see. I suspected plastic when I saw the price, but the ad says chrome plated metal. Downside may be mounting...looks like they attach from underneath. Also adjustment (I noticed after I ordered) is unusual to say the least..loosen screw, adjust, retighten. Huh? http://www.ebay.com/itm/200609405434
Tex, I don't know if those Talbot style mirrors are going to do anything to enhance your gorgeous '57. How about stock '56 mirrors? They mount from the top with 2 screws and are fairly unobtrusive. You can even get them with the Ford script on the base for extra dough. Check out Dennis Carpenter.
LOL...well they certainly won't be the first thing I've bought for my car I ended up keeping on a shelf. Thanks for the input. I've looked at the '56's...liked them, but not to the point it was "that's the one". Also considered '63 500XL's 'cause they have a design similar to my '63 taillight lens center section.
They should come with a plate that screws on from the top. It looks like they show the gasket only in the picture. Worth asking the seller though.
My 55 Ford Country Sedan had a stock mirror on the driver side and one in the same position on the p***enger side. The p***enger side was a total waste. Could not even see it due to window post. I tried one of those "clamp-on" door frame ones on that side, but could never quite get it situated well enough to make it functional. (Did not want to throw one way out on the right fender.) I ended up just filling in the holes on the p***enger side and replacing the driver-side with a very nice re-pop. I don't think cars really came with two mirrors in those days.
Those plates are usally held on with sheet metal screws. The screws that come with this are machine screws which is what lead me to think they screw into the bottom of the mirror.
if they are machine screws and you know someone with a rivnut kit you would be able to drill the plate.then attach from top also a much stronger mount in my opinion.never mind trying to install and tighten from inside the door or fender my $02
I purchased these from eBay for $56.00 with shipping. I received them today and they look great. Texas I was looking at the ones you are looking at and thought they may be to big for my car, but I do like the looks of those. Not sure if I'm going to use one or both. Will post pix's when installed
