Im working on my brothers 64 parklane. He needs rear Brake drums. They are next to impossible to find. So I came up with an Idea....Take the rear backing plates and everything off like a 70 - 74 Ford car with a 9"

Then we can get some drums for that application...Have you guys ever done this??? Do you think its workable.

Does that have the 9" already, with 5 lug...or the 8 with 4 lug? If it's the 9" with 5 lug it should work...

There are different bearing cup sizes on the tubes. You can swap em around as long as they are the same size brg. and the backing plate holes line up. There are about 4 different patterns. I am doing something similar on my 57 Ford rear end.

I'm surprised that the Mercury would be so different. I thought they would be the same as a Galaxie.

Try www.fordmuscle.com in the Galaxie forum. There are a couple of other Galaxie lists that have Merc guys on them too that might be able to answer.

I have a 1966 Motor's manual. It shows the brakes for 59 - 66 Mercury full size being the same that Ford used from 61 - 66. Unfortunately it doesn't give any kind of measurements. I would suggest your friend see if he can get ahold of a Galaxie drum and compare measurements or just try it.

  5. Look harder for drums that will work, correct diameter, then machine holes to fit. A lot easier than complete changeover.

    Hey,

check out a Hollander's interchange manual.....you may be able to
slide a whole Ford 9" outa a big wagon or PU, from a bone yard or
rebuilder, for cheaper than ya could mess with backing plates and
    other drums.

Not sure if its still possible, but I actually ordered a pair of new drums for mine at Autozone several years ago. I believe it was $108 for the pair.

I have a spare one I can take measurements from. If you want, shoot me a PM and we can measure it all out comparing yours and mine. Best bet is to check out an interchange manual.

  9. Seems to me the drum doesn't care so much what car it's on, it just needs to be X deep, have an X hole in it and the right lug spacing. Don't overlook 1/2 ton pickup applications -

You can look up parts online with Napa and Advance Auto (which appears to include Checker/Schucks/Kragen) at their websites, too, may get you a line on a drum.
