I think it's more alike than different. In the case of the '5s7 Plymouth, the vault was breached and had lots of mud and water. In the case of the VW being discussed here, the creek bed is wet, earth beneath it is mud, the water that makes dirt 'mud' contains oxygen. Based on the steel/iron/aluminum items I have seen found in dirt/mud, they fared worse than being just in water or the atmosphere.

    Doesn't really matter.........just speculating.......... :)

  3. Hell just get a couple cordless sawzalls and cut the rear of the roof out of it and forget the rest. There's probably not much left of it and how do you dig it out when it's in the water anyhow?

from what I have seen with vw bugs here in Ontario the frames/floors do not fare well this one buried for who knows how long in water/mud would most likely be worse then the salt/chemicals to melt ice. old vw bugs are the only import id be caught dead in but they are a better candidate for erosion control then some of the stuff I have seen used like bren carriers

  5. It wouldn't be an easy recovery for sure.

If I were to cut sections, I'd want the rear window and vents below them along with the dash and windshield surround. All of which are under mud.

Maybe I should just hunt those pieces and forget about digging it out. It would probably be easier!

Without a doubt, pure speculation until its dug out. The Plymouth was more in muddy water, this ones buried in thick mud. ??
And realistically. its a freakin' bug, not a '32 Tudor...:p

  7. You all must have never had to dig real mud.

If its up to the roof line in mud you're looking at a really big hole to get it out. You'll have to terrace the hole to make the inevitable cave in survivable, then dig it out again after that cave in. The mud closest to the bug on top will need to be thrown 20 feet away. That's about a 25' square hole in a muddy creek bed & Every shovel full will be a fight.

Ha ha ha! I can see it now, thirty years from now, some guy will be posting "Hey, look what I found in this creek bed!":p

  11. Jim i am in Sevierville .I didnt think there was a creek that big to put a v.w. in.Bruce.

  12. If I found some oval's and a split I would be there with a shovel digging them out. Go get them ......

  13. Pic please I would love to see this!!!!

  14. If you guys think the EPA is a bunch of bull just google EPA rules on disturbing a creek.

  15. Ya gotta ask yourself, did someone bury it or has it been here long enough to get covered up by stuff coming down stream? If its the latter, I'd say its done...been there a long time. Cut the top off and go home.

  16. I think at least some investigation is needed. Is it still there? Do a little digging around and see what condition it is below mud line.

.....then decide if it is sufficient to dig it all out.

It was dumped in the creek to help stop erosion of the creek bank in the '60's or '70's. There are others there

Pay attention! It's been there over 50 years and was junk when put in the creek. Why talk about it. Just go quietly and see how much of a problem it would be to dig it out. As mentioned, depending on how deep and fast the creek is running, it's possible you can't get it dug out without heavy equipment and a temporary dam. I think you're up the creek without a paddle.
Then again this may be the best time to dig out what you can get if it hasn't been raining a lot. Take fresh gas. It may start right up. VW's were good little engines back then.

Yep, a 'Barn Door' Kombi........the Type 2 equivalent of the Spilt/Oval Window Type 1.

Bold restoration project, no doubt

  26. I was about to say something similar, maybe use a pressure washer of some sort to wash away the mud enough to get an idea if there's even any metal to dig out.

I think there is is a lot of fantasy going on here. It reminds me of raising the Titanic, Jeeps in crates or P40s in a field.
Firstly it's junk not worth the effort.
Secondly and more important if you do not own the property or do not have written permission to recover it from the property owner, it's stealing as simple as that.

  28. This is one of those fun threads that has lived longer than I would have expected. I had a lot of experience with those "Cotton Mouth" Water Moccasins in my East Tennessee youth. I wouldn't go near that creek!
