i really didn't know where to post this cause its a question but its also tech advice so I'll just post it here...I'm thinking of putting a continental kit on my 55' poncho then extending the rear qauters, but I really don't wanna spend 995$ to buy a cont. kit. Question is anyone know how to make a kit or any way to transform something into one...Help if you can it would be greatly appreciated.

I love this east cost **** man, cool idea.

All you actually need here is the mechanism that will swing the tire down and then latch it to the trunk lid. Most of the ones I've seen, and a few friends of mine that have made their own continental kits, have built a frame that is underneath the pans, then have arms that come up to mount the tire to. These arms are hinged of course, and have a stantion that comes off that latched into the trunk with a hood latch style clasp.

I hope this made some sense, good luck

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't many cont kits simply consist of the same bumper sitting on longer frame mounts with a longer rear gravel pan? There's a local car show here in Crete, IL in the summer and out of the maybe 40 cars, 10 of them have cont kits and I find myself spending quite a bit of time looking them over. Like I said, it seems like slightly longer and beefier rear bumper mounting brackets, con't specific gravel pan, stock bumper, and the tire cover itself.

anyone got any good pics of what they are talking about with the mechanism or a decent drawling of the way one would hook up and what about the spare tire cover, how would I go about making that or is there a place where you can just buy that. I can make my own gravel pan, thanks for all the help guys

How about taking a swing-away spare tire carrier off the back of an SUV?
    Turn it 90 degrees....

That's what I was thinking. Hit up the junkyard and start checking vans, blazers, broncos, ect...

I like the kustom extended quarters idea.

What ever you do though, DO NOT use the trim ring off of a van or truck. The face plate is fine, but not the trim ring.

A van trim ring is flat across the top and radiused at the edges, as opposed to an old style trim that maintains a curve across the whole thing. Believe me, a van trim ring will stick out like a sore thumb and will ruin whatever cool things you do to this car.

Did you ever come up with a solution for a home made connie kit?
