looking at putting in a set of dropped springs in my 62 olds. i see that most companies only offer 2 inch dropped springs as a rule of thumb, but i found a guy who would make them in any drop i want BUT... i'm wondering if at some point the car becomes impossible to align or creates some other problem in the front end. i have yet to crawl under the car to see how far i can go and still be drivable, but i want to have all the information in my head while i'm figuring things out. thanks.
2" is as far as you can go and be driveable. You only have about 6 or 7 inches of clearance to start with. Drop it more than 2" add a couple of fat friends and a trunk full of baggage and you will be dragging the ground over every pot hole, man hole cover, driveway and gas station entrance.
I cut 1 and a half coils out of the front of my '61, which is the same chassis as your '62 and it gave me an inch of suspension travel before the stops. It rarely bottoms out though, and absolutely no bump steer issues. I'm transplanting in a SBC so the front end will come up a bit then too!
I have 3" drop Springs installed in my 62 Starfire. Ordered them at coilsprings.com. They told me less drop would be better. I didn´t listen. It sits very low and drives ok with original tire diameter, but bottoms out often on rough streets. What tires do you want to run? If I put on my 14" rims with radial tires it sits lowerr and bottoms out much more. I also think that the car is lower with every year on the street. Have a friend with a 59 Buick and 3" lower springs how has the same experiance with his suspension. He then put Rubber Spacers under the springs to lift the car a bit again, after few years with those he´s now thinking about new springs again. I wouldn´t go lower than 2" or maybe 2,5" if I would buy new springs now.
