Has anyone converted there 51-53 chevy truck VENT style doors into 47-50 style doors with out vents?? Reason being is that i have a 50 truck but my doors are 51vent style, but my doors are very clean,, straight and rust free. I've found 50 doors but not as clean as the ones i have. So to make it ezr body work wise i want to use mine. Now i do have an old set of 50 doors but man they are so bad there worthless in cancer and rust. So i've been noticing some slight changes in bracket holes and window guides, but not much so i was just wondering if any one has done this and what i might be needing to change add or do? Please any info will help, thanks
It should be a simple matter of removing the wind wing ***embly and using the 50 window components. You do have the 50 windows, or atleast the steel frame for the gl***?
F-ONE is right on the money. The key to making the swap is having the 48/49 (in some cases early 1950) door gl*** steel frame. The frame is essential. If for no other reason to fit the channel properly and believe me they keep the door gl*** from cracking when somebody slams the door too hard. If you have a left and right door, no matter how bad the rust is, as long as it has the single gl*** set-up, it is a simple swap. I've seen some really ugly door gl*** mechanism that as rusty as it seems, really cleaned up and worked well. RINALDI
The regulators are different. The early uses a rail on the inside of the door. Easiest to find a set of doors. jerry
If I remember right, the latch area is different on the newer doors with push ****on handles. Good chance I'm wrong, though. Blue
So all the doors for 47-55 1st series are all the same the only difference is in 51 they came out with wing windows and in 52 they introduced push ****on door handles. So all you have to do is remove the wing window and use the window track from your 50 doors and you'll be good to go. Hope this helps Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Thank you all for your info and from what some of you are mentioning; yes you are correct in regards to window mechanisms, but by looking at that, i have do drill out some bolt holes on the 51 doors because do to the mechanisms there are different bolt patterns from 47-50 compared to 51-53 which is not a big deal but i think going back to what F-ONE mentioned about the steel window frames i beleive they come on the repop full windows if your talking about the lil frame that follows along the contour of the window gl*** edge? Or that crinkly cut looking steel frame that wraps inside the door frame? My only issue is that if you look inside the 47-50 door towards the back inside of were the lock latch goes you can see a window guide thats bolted down, one bolt inside and 2 on the outside inner edge. Luckily one of the old doors i had has one but i'm missing the p***enger side. So i think this is were might another issue because the inner side of were the hinges go theres another short window guide but thats welded in.
The front window channel could be difficult to install into the doors as there is no opening at the front of the door
So as for the upper window channels it looks like i found the repops that i will need for the 50 door conversion,
i think my biggest issue will be (unless someone has an extra pair for the 50drs) is the inner window guides that help and hold the window inplace as it sits inside the door once it'a all the way down. they look like these in the pic but these are for the 51-53
Beauty about 47-55 first series truck are the parts are all interchangeable for example my truck has a 50 cab, 51 doors and the fenders and bed are off a 48 so finding parts for your truck at swaps meets is eaiser Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
yeah you are correct on alot of interchangeable parts , but i want to keep all on my truck with the same year, so thats y i wanted to convert my 51 vent doors to the correct 50 full window doors to go with my 50cab.
Best trick I've seen on our style of truck----A buddy built in a power BACK window into his 51. He made it look awfully easy. Plenty of room for a pair of vertical window channels, hung a power lift mech. at bottom. the bottom is simple stop and the top has a lot of room to set stop limits. He said the only thing he'd do different would be to not bother shaping the top of the gl***, as it doesn't really show enough to notice. Pop open the cowl vent and drop the back window, or the vent(s), or any combination and VOILA easy breezy!! Oh yea, even without air conditioning, when it's raining, open any thing and crack the back window and the WINDSHIELD NEVER FOGS UP. Wish I had thought of that!! BILL RINALDI
I've got a set of '50 doors out back. No guts in them but not rusty as far as I can see. If you are out this way let me know and we can work something out. jerry
Can anyone or does that member still make those brackets ??? Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
