'56 292y. After replacing spark plugs, points, condenser, and andjusting valves, the engine fired right up and ran great. Shut it down and now the engine will not fire, just cranks. Any ideas?

Pull a Plug Wire and check for Spark when cranking. Hold the wire close to engine block, headers, etc with insulated pliers. If you have Spark then it probably a Fuel problem. Check if you have fuel in Carburetor and fuel pressure. If you have both Spark and Fuel and it won't run then it could be the timing is off.
    Good Luck!

I readjusted the point gap and got the car to start.

New problem: The car idles great in neutral. When I put it in reverse or drive, it will bog down and die with acceleration.

Will it rev pretty good in neutral or only idle?

Ok so it sounds like the advance is working just fine, but boy she sure can't handle a load off idle according to what you are telling us.

If you didn't touch the carburetor then I would say it would have to be your distributor acting funny. How is your distributor primary lead wire? Sounds like it may be shortin'. Or maybe... the lead from your points/condenser. sometimes those wires are pretty touchy and if they ground out... then whammo - no juice.

Are you still running the stock '56 Carb and distributor?

Check your point gap again. It sounds like the points are too close. Have you checked the dwell angle? Could also be the condenser. Try putting the original back in.

I pulled the carb for a cleaning today. I don't know how this engine ran at all. Lots of debris in the bowl and the choke was full of rust. I ended up swapping carbs from another '56 project I have going. Huge difference. Now to figure out why the distributor will not move.

Common Ford problem, tap the base gently and give it a good soak with PB Blaster overnight. This applies to the later Ford engines as well the O-ring will cause the sticking, when you install a distributor give the O-ring area a good coat of anti-seize.
