Hey guys, anyone know of some knowledgeable folks within a few hours of central AL for my Chevy 235 build? I've searched and read alot, and just haven't found any info on someone close that still builds these inline 6's. But a good machine shop familiar with the tricks to make them better would be sufficient if anyone knows of anything like that. I kinda want to experience the building myself with the help of my GM mechanic buddy - but although his big block Nova is awesome, I don't think he has played with alot of the inlines and making them hotter for a reliable driver.
Howtons in Bessemer close to Birmingham. They have been building top notch engines for years. Be sure to let them know how you are going to drive your car. . You know cam selection and clearances. The also build very strong Flathead Ford engines.
curbfeeler, thanks for the advice. I am looking to make a reliable/driveable car for weekends and shows and such - no 1/4 mile stuff. But, in reading about some of the "hop-ups" for the inline's, I see a few "tricks" mentioned here and there like drilling and tapping for a modern remote oil filter, etc. (BTW, drilling into the block scares the bejesus outta me!) This engine is a one owner 56 truck 235 with about 60K on it. I would really like to tear it down myself and have the machine work done (again, need specific advice on what I need to ask/look for when I do that). Then have a mechanic friend assist me in assembly so I can also learn there. Most in depth engine work I have done is changing intake/dizzy/carb on a SBC. Certainly don't want to go as extreme as the Clifford 6=8, just a mild improvement that still allows good street manners and reliability. All the usual type stuff - Fenton headers and a dual carb intake with small carbs like Langdon recommends, small cam. My engine has the 848 head, so hopefully it checks out good with no issues. Also gonna put a T5 and S10 3.42 rear behind it and would like to get decent cruise-ability on the interstate. Thanks for the help guys.
Man that seems hi. I built engines for years from my machine shop and very few sixes went out the door that high. (only one I remember. A full race 300 Ford) I just finished a slant six for my gasser project today. I am in just under $500 . Probably if I had to buy everything and send it out I would be in about $1500. I did have the head already from when I used it on the dragster and several experimental cams. I have done lots of race car sixes including a 235 some years ago. Supposed to have a 261 to do for a friend shortly. Maybe I should move to the Midwest . Last serious Chev six was a 250 for street use but hi performance . I believe the bill was right around $2500 and he is still happy after several years running it. Matter a fact was talking to him tonite at cruise nite. don
