So here's the scoop, I just picked up this 1965 sbc 327 Corvette engine "HN" code (fuelie 375hp). Of course the FI and 462 (2.02) heads are long gone, but for the price paid... this is a great start. Right now it is loaded with stock bottom end internals w/ cast 1.94 valve heads and an Edelbrock Torquer intake. The end goal is for this engine to power a street/strip 1954 2dr Customline that is no slouch on the 1/4 mile. I have a built th350 trans (no stall converter yet) and a 9" rear that'll finish off the drivetrain. Need help deciding on what new heads, cam, intake, carb, and ignition would be suited for this engine. I'm also intending to upgrade the car to power brakes (need to stop this freight train). Was looking at the Edelbrock Performer RPM top end packages, but I have no experience with those cams (always ran Comp components). Heads? Chamber size? Performer RPM cam too radical? What ignition system? Dual plane intake for better low end? Would love to see 400+hp. Thanks in advance for your input. Oh, and on a realistic budget...
The RPM air gap would be my bet or manifold. Best of both worlds dual plane for low end power and its good in th upper range as well, best sbc manifold out there.
You might not like the look, but a set of aluminum heads would be one of the better investments you could make. Head technology has come so far from the old double humper days that new ones make so much more sense than having old ones redone. I have as much in having a set of World Products Sportsman heads (cast iron) reworked as I would have had in a new set of Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, and the only reason I used them is because I had them. The aluminum heads can be painted to match the block, if that concerns you too. I also agree with Dooley on the Air Gap intake, that is what I have for my 355, with a 750 DP Holley. Don
That'd be a damn desirable piece to the right Corvette dude, I'd think. Probably enough to do a carb to pan, plug & play replacement of your (reasonable) choice. You would lose considerable 'cool' factor though...
The edelbrock Perf RPM package will get you the HP, and the cam is not that radical. Great street strip combo, with some tweeking.
Does that still have the original forged domed pistons in it? If it were mine and I were building it street/strip, it would be more strip oriented than previous suggestions. AFR heads, custom solid roller cam, probably around .650 lift, either a large single plane or tunnel ram, lots of CFM and lots of rpm. MSD ignition components. None of these are traditional parts, but it will go fast. If you're wanting to stick to traditional parts, put on fuelie heads with some port work, Edelbrock C4B intake with a Carter carb, dual point distributor. Lots of old grind cams still out there, the Isky 280 solid still seems to be a popular choice. There's always the Duntov 30-30 or 327/350hp hyd cams too. Devin
I'm getting 13.20 Ets @ 105Mph. with these set of heads on my 350. If your 327 has the domed hi compression pistons. It will be a pretty awesome combo. http://www.theengineshop.com/produc...n-heads/s-r-stock-replacement-iron-heads.html With Crane Cam Solid flat tappet 488/500 lift. I have a few pics on my album pages.
Thanks for the insights. I'm really leaning to the Edelbrock Performer RPM top end kit... and from prior engine owner, I'm told internals are original so I'd expect to see the dome top pistons. Will I need valve relief for the Perf RPM heads & dome tops?
