Need Help!!..Ive been working on my 54 Chevy for a while and im at the point to were im tuning the motor, originally came with a manual choke i had rebuilt and ran good no problems but it sat for a while than with time it leaked like crazy, so i upgraded to the original carb a automatic choke Rochester BC, runs good i pump twice fires up no problem, but the problem i have is that once i turn off it wont start unless i pump the gas pedal and i was doing research and came across the vapor lock issues but it does it when the motor is cold and semi hot, everthing on the motor has been replaced from tank to carb, valves have beed adjusted, timing is good, i hooked up a vacuum gauge it reads at a steady 15 i dont want to be pumping on the gas pedal thru out the day when i get it on the road, any ideas would be a great help, or any input of anybody having the same problem.
Mine does this after it sets a few days, is hard to start. I like your engine-I am about to detail mine. Care to post a couple from the other side?
Is the choke blade working correctly with the engine temperature? Is is open or closed when you try to restart? You might also want to check the ignition side...
Is the choke closing when it's cold? To start a carbureted car with an automatic choke you are supposed to push the accelerator to the floor and let it back up 1 time. The choke should close allowing the vehicle to start. I don't know if the engines that came with a manual choke have the tube in the exhaust manifold to heat the choke. I seem to recall that the tubes carbon up insulating the tube or rust out sending exhaust into the choke thermostat. You might need to convert to an electrically heated choke.
Choke is working I checked it last night, I was reading more and maybe I'm not getting enough fuel in the carb bowl as a reserve for the next start, some say to upgrade to a electric fuel pump. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Don't see why an electric fuel pump will solve the problem. It will pump until the carb shuts off fuel, just like the mechanical one. If you need more fuel in the carb, adjust the float.
sound like the fuel in the bowl evaporates after you shut it off. can you smell gasoline after a hot shut down? my dodge does it as the carb, filter and exhaust manifold are all in the same place.
