Before I go to the local DMV, i would like to get some opinions on what I should do. Here is the back story. I just bought a 29 Ford Tudor from my grandma. After I bought it, she told me that it had an open ***le. When my grandpa bought it, he never put it in his name, The previous owner just signed the ***le over. At the time I didnt think anything about it. After looking at the ***le, it was signed over in 1992. Now I have started tearing into it, and its down to the body sitting on the frame. I still have the motor, but the number on the block doesn't match the VIN on the ***le. I haven't taken the body off the frame to verify the number on the frame yet. I want to know if I will be able to ***le the car in my name. I paid in cash, but I could get my grandma to type up a bill of sale no problem. Do you think I will have a problem. I dont want to tell the DMV that the car is in pieces, in fear that they wont let me ***le it in my name. What should I do?
Also I plan on getting a new rolling ch***is for the car and obviously putting a different motor in the car.
Hire a ***le service. Sounds like you are replacing everything that has a useable number so probably will have to get an ***igned VIN.
I live in Indiana, am in the process of building a model A with my kid. A collection of parts, different body, frame, engine, etc. that I have been collecting for a few years. I got a ***le with the body, but it was signed by someone years ago in the wrong place so basically worthless. I called local PD, they came out and looked at it (search for my thread and you will see where it is at currently). They said to call them when it is running and driving and substantially roadworthy (ie, turn signals, etc.). At that point they will come out and inspect it. There is special paperwork in Indiana that you can get a new VIN through using that inspection. Pretty straightforward process. I did not mention the old ***le, I sold the ch***is anyway. He just saw a pile of parts. I would suggest do the same
Well here in NC taking a open ***le into the plate agency will get you in big trouble so dont do that. If the previous owner signed it but your grandpa didnt put your name as buyer and go send it off. Keeping your mouth shut while doing so about not matching #'s but you may want to see if the frame # matches the ***le.
You don't need to pull the body off to read the number on an A. You may need to lift one side to remove the splash apron though. It's stamped right above the steering box, on the top inside edge of the rail.
if your grampa didn't sign his name on it just sign your name to it & take it in, that is if its an Indiana ***le. if out of state you better try to find some numbers & hope they match.
If the ***le numbers match the numbers on the vehicle you have I would have it inspected by law enforcement there's a special form pick one up at your bmv. I did one on a basket case motorcycle several years ago. Took all the parts to Noblesville In. police dept. They checked the numbers filled out the paper work I paid a small fee. Took that paper work and bill of sales to bmv filed for ***le payed fees. Several weeks later ***le came in the mail Sorry to be so long winded, but I would take the ***le,paper work from police dept. you and your grandmother to the bmv and tell them the story and I'm sure they will fix you up. After all as long every thing is on the up and up it's to the states advantage financially to ***le that vehicle. There may be a small fine because your ***le is supposed to be registered or transferred within so many day after sale. If your grandfather has p***ed away take a copy of the death certificate. Ron
I third this. The key is IF there was no name signed in as buyer yet. I can personally tell you that every license branch around here will give you a different story of how to do it. I have found the less info you give them the better off you are.
One thing to keep in mind if the buyer info is blank and you put your name on it. How old were you in 1992? Ron
haha I was 2 in 1992, so idk if thats going to work. Maybe I can have my dad sign it and then "buy" it from him.
I don't see the point in messing with that ***le. If you change the motor and ch***is it's not going to match that ***le so it will be worthless when you get it driveable.
you guys are complicating a simple uncomplicated issue. Indiana does not have screwed up laws like some other states regarding customized vehicles. it is an original model a so just take the ***le in and transfer it and don't get all paranoid over it. and nobody is going to question your age in 1992. in Indiana you can still modify you vehicle without having to jump thru hoops on ***le work. be happy that things in indiana are still so simple
What about getting a new frame? Can i sell the original frame and use the same VIN number? The only VIN number is on the original frame. I plan on buying a new frame from Brookvilleroadster
There you open yourself up to a problem. If you ***le the car with your frame serial number and then sell the original frame and someone ELSE tries to ***le THEIR car with your original frame's serial number you just opened up a can of worms. I personally would not sell the original frame. Stock model A frames don't fetch enough cash to risk this problem coming back to bite you.
***le it first. Anything you do after it's in your name is nobodies business and you don't need to get permission from the state. Your worrying about stuff you plan on doing to a vehicle you currently don't even own legally.
If you find the numbers on the frame match the ***le cut out around them and weld them into your new frame. That way things match and the old frame won't come back to haunt you.
