Thanks everyone for nice words .I have been having trouble with the auto supply places . First NAPA took 2 weeks to get my rear brake parts and then tried to charge me $15 for shipping on $5 worth of springs . Then ROCK AUTO shipped wrong lower control arm twice , still waiting on the right one . I finshed painting the frame and got the rear end done . Motor and trans mounted and started on the grocery bags ,this is a grocery geter , and started running gas and brake lines . Hope to have a compleated go cart by mid October . Wife is getting excitted about her 59 wagon , so I'm pulling front end of this weekend along with motor . I will load it up on a trailer next week and take it to Al. to have a ch***is built for it . She will be needing a new car next year and I just thought why not spend the $$$ on the wagon and kill to birds with one check ? I think that control are is for a big truck ?
Finished the frame , suspension, brakes and air lines . Chasie is looking nice . Yesterday I started striping out the doors and getting ready to do body work . Top had lots of dents and some rust out in doors . Need to get part of it done and primed befor I put it on frame . Will paint firewall before mounting it . Door hinges are in bad shape and worn out . Anyone had experience with aftermarket ? Banged around on the roof for a couple of hours last night and it looks lots better . Will cut and Hammer weld in some patch panels today . Will post some photos latter in the week . Will try out my new shrinking disk too , only scared a little . I hate body work ( sanding ) .
Worked out in shop today and found out the cab was red and fenders were cream yellow ? WTF . Started beating out the roof and found some cracks that I will Hammer Weld ( fuse back togeather ) . wonder if I should wait till I have the roof smoothed out ? Also removed old lights from roof and found the red paint . I have 3 nos lights but need the mounting pads . Found 13 holes in each door . Rust in bottom of door and sill , and bottom of cowl that is not used . I will cut this out and cap to keep out dirt and water . Hope to have roof done Tuesday and other rust replaced by next week . Can't wait to get it in primer .
Got out my old books and did some studying . Welded up cracks with my gas welder with a 000 tip ,hammered it out , and metal finished . Worked on rest of the roof and got it close . Will finish next day I have free .
Look'n real nice Blue. I cut the bottom off of the cowl on my '46 when I built it too. BTW, on the door hinges, would you be able to drill them out big enough to press in some bronze bushings like the ones used on GM cars and trucks in the 60s. Or even if you have to make something up on the lathe to press in and make them round again for new pins. Just an idea.
Finished the rooftop and starting the patch work on doors and bottom of cowl . I hope to have cab in primer and mounted to frame in the next two weeks . Going out to East Texas to a Gene Winfield metal course this weekend coming up . Been to a chop cl*** he gave and it was great . Will post some photos next week . Also got my brake lines ran and air lines roughed in . And started running water lines for radiator. Need to get all this done before I mount cab , besides I get tired of beating metal all day .
Been a while . Went to Leon B's garage in Van . Tx to a Gene Winfield sheet metal cl*** . A lot of info in 2 days . Metal forming , leading , welding ,and I learned to weld sheet Al . with ox/acc . I think I will stick to tig . The cl*** had some HS students . They were very impressive and I think the future looks bright for the future of the hobby . TJ and his staff were great and put on a great feed on both days . Got my drive shaft made and instaled . Patched the bottom of the cowl and have started the bottom of the doors . Should have got a lot more work done but had to pay some bills and have been working on a few HD's . Converted a 88" to 95' and did a tune on it . And a couple of other projects . Maybe I will get primer sprayed this next week if it warms up . First is the master ,second some dumb student , third is our future , and last
Don't know why it cut off ? Last picture is TJ owner of shop and one great guy and the MAN himself Mr. Winfield .
Getting body ready for primer . Was working on floor boards and finishing up mounts for seat , shifter, and gas pedal so i can paint bottom and be done with it . Up in my parts room and ran into the 59 chevy dash I reworked and got mad it didn't fit ,so you know what happened next . Shortened dash 2" and lowered seat mount 2" and its going to work . Still have to weld it up this weekend . Now I need to revisit the dodge quarters and make them work .
Still need to make some column mounts . Have a ?????? I hear the new epoxy primer goes on first and then you bondo after ,any body done fhis and does it work with the gl*** reinforced bondo as I like to use this on welded areas .
You can put your filler over epoxy primer, but don't have to. I prefer to put it directly onto clean , prepared bare steel. Then epoxy. Not sure about the gl*** strand filler, as I avoid it like the plague, unless I'm doing a fibergl*** repair.
Old school is to apply bondo directly to the bare metal. Today's theory is to primer seal the metal first. The reason is that some chemist say that the polymers in the fill will corrode the bare metal in time causing a ******* failure. It's your call, but I feel much better when applying the primer sealer first before any filler. The only times I saw bondo fail was when apply to bare metal. When examining the failure, you can see the metal has rusted and pitted.
Finished fitting floor pans and welded them in today . Coated with a rust proff paint ? I am going to use lizardskin on body floors and firewall and back of cab where it is in line with motor . Can you paint over this with a finish coat or better to use on inside ? Any one have used this stuff ? It makes since to use it on outside so heat doesn't go through the tin . Also it says to use on painted surface , can I use spray can primer on bottom of floor pans and then coat with lizard skin ?
Dash looks awesome Blue, Saw a couple Cl***ic instruments gauge packages for 59 dashes at SEMA. very nice but pricey.
Thanks guys . B-Bop I saw those Gauges at GG Scotsdale , bought the 57 chevy four in one speed with the two outside ones . Got the speedo ring out of the 59 kit and will be using the two extra holes for ac vents , at least that's the plan !?
Look'n good Blue. Planning to see it in person the weekend of 3/26/15 if you'll be around. Going to try and stay out of the ER this time.
Glad to hear your comming south and your always welcome to my casa . Don't think the ER will miss you. Are you going to be in Texas till LSR in Austin ? Made the stearing mounts made yesterday , also mounts for ac and tied in back of brake pedal . Will finish the rest of the cab today and will be ready to prime .
Merry Christmas! All the points that needed welding in the cab are finished . Tomorrow looks to be in 60's so I will clean out area in shop ,then put up some plastic covers after a good vacuume and floor wash . Will be warm on Monday and with the help of a heater will try to get cab in prime before cold wet weather hits latter in the week . I may even get ceramic coat on in cab . Got big plans and dates planed for January . Will keep fingers crossed . Blue
Blue, I really like your project and have been following since the beginning. If you have the Lizard Skin you already may know, but this stuff sprays like drywall texture. you can paint over it if you want to but it will look like the ceiling in my living room (if you paint it white). It is designed to go behind the interior finishes inside the cabin. I did the entire top of an OT 1st gen Bronco and it works great. the little tin top now sounds like it's made of fibergl***, and you can hear the radio at 70mph! Please keep posting your progress, and enjoy the holidays!
As Mr. Winfield says " everyday is a school day " . Is this skin stuff flexible enough to be hammered on ? I appreciate all the kind words from everyone . I'm slow but will keep on pluggin along . Blue
Primeing cab today , then working on finishing up body work to get cab in paint to put on frame . Will worry about rest of paint latter . I need to hear it run to get reenigised as its been a slow process . Moose did a better photo shop on truck for me . I'm Leaning on the all red cab . What do you think?
Used my new showtime 90 help system to day to shoot my epoxy primer . I hope the learing curve is fast on this gun or I will be back to my old brinks . Paint didn't flow the way I liked and will need some sanding . Talked to TP tool and they gave me some free advice . Well it's ,the cab , is all primed and in a couple of days I will start filler , thin coat , and then seal and paint cab so I can mount . I HATE PAINTING !!!!!!!'
