Has anyone switched axles on a Lincoln Versaille differential from 5 on 4 1/2 to 5 on 5 on 5 1/2? 28 spline, big bearing. Unequal length axles. I want to use a set of 16" Kelsey wires. Thanks.

ive never done it but if it cant be done have you thought about wheel adapters. a lot of places make them and some are made very good. you can do A google search for them. just an option.

Thanks; yep I have a set from Rally American (Gary and Jimmy) Great people BTW. The issue on the rear is back spacing. My widened Kelseys have 5", which would be perfect, except the spacer adds around 1"...too tight to fender.

Yes I have , I am thinking I used early Bronco axles . Can't remember but worked out no issues . You have to redrill rotors

Thanks; I have already replaced the rear rotors with 11" Ford truck and early finned Buick drums. I realize Bronco has a similar axle, but still need year if you can find or remember. Were they 28 spline and also "unequal length?"

Mine were 28 spline unequal length. Not sure what they were out of but exact fit . I am sure they were 5x5.5 had to be early pre 77 bronco . Same bearing size

Thanks again; I will continue to "explore" the Bronco options. Perhaps someone else will be able to identify the specific year and application. Much-appreciated.

Bronco axle shafts have different lengths and brake offsets depending on the bearing and brake size, according to the GVWR package it was ordered with.

Versailles axles are 30.188/26.188 with 2.438 brake offset

    66-75 Small Bearing Axles
    Bearing OD Diameter: 2.833
Axle Length: PS 29.625", DS 27.125"
    Brakes: 10" X 2 1/2"
    Brake Back Spacing: 2.2”

74-75 Medium Duty - Large Bearing Axle (Torino)
    Bearing OD Diameter: 3.150
Axle Length: PS 29.750", DS 27.250"
    Brakes: 10" X 2 1/2"
    Brake Back Spacing: 2.5”

66-75 STD Duty - Large Bearing Axle
    Bearing OD Diameter: 3.150
Axle Length: PS 29.250", DS 26.937"
    Brakes: 11" X 1 3/4"
    Brake Back Spacing: 2”

76-77 Heavy Duty - Large Bearing Axle
    Bearing OD Diameter: 3.150
Axle Length: PS 29.687", DS 27.187"
    Brakes: 11" X 2 1/2"

Wow! Very helpful; is there a way that I can determine if these are 28 spline?
    Thanks much.

All 66-77 Bronco axles are originally 28 spline. Many were upgraded to 31 spline by owners for off-road use though.

Appreciate all of your suggestions and info. Lynn P "reminded" me of a time-honored fix...weld a ring around the axle flange and re-drill. The 5 1/2 bolt circle needs at least a 6 1/2 diameter surface which the flat surface of the Buick drum will accommodate. I believe the 5 1/2 Broncos use a 7 1/4 which (in my application) would have to be narrowed. Great site, great help.
