Technical Need steering box ID help

I could use a hand identifying this steering box. It's origin is unknown, other than it came with my Studebaker.

that's a Chrysler power steering box, used in the 60s-70s on most of the Dodge, Chrysler, plymouth cars

I've been looking for that answer for a LONG time, I cannot express my gratitude enough.

For the bonus round, is there any chance you would have a recommendation for a compatible, smaller box? This thing is massive and really cramps my engine compartment. I bought a 1971 Chevy Impala pump from the 350ci chassis to help push the fluids.

 

I don't know what you're dealing with...where the steering linkage is, what the frame looks like, where the engine is, etc. posting pictures of where it has to mount might help others help you. Putting power steering in a stude is something only a few guys have done.

 

Here is an image that almost shows the box. I may have other pictures, and will keep looking. Perhaps I'll find a cell phone photo.

 

Oh...you didn't tell us it has a Volare suspension installed in it already. The box you have it what you need, although there is also a manual version available. It's a pain mounting an engine in a car with one of those subframes.

 

Sorry, I just assumed that a simple box for box swap wouldn't require the 1-off setup details. Technically, what you're looking at is 1991 Ford Thunderbird, at least, according to the receipt that was in the pile of misc truck papers.

It looks like Borgeson makes a replacement power steering box with an updated 14:1 ratio, and it appears to be ~25% smaller (13lbs or so in weight savings). The downside is that it's $715. Not exactly where I planned to spend that sort of change.

 

The suspension in the picture you posted is from a late 70s Dodge Aspen or Plymouth Volare. it is not a 1991 Thunderbird.

In the big folder of stuff that I received when my step-dad passed away, is a large envelope of receipts. Being that I didn't get a chance to talk to him about the truck I inherited, I've been forced to play detective and so, based on a receipt from the local wrecking yard, I thought it was Ford. Now you're making me want to post a ton of other mystery photos to see what else I've got wrong. ;-)
