I am seriously contemplating removing the 235 and 3 speed out of my '62 C10. Thing is, what do I replace it with? I have narrowed it down to the following: I6 - 230/250 (pre-'74) and 3 sp or auto. V8 - Cadillac or BOP (cheaper to obtain) with auto. I was thinking Caddy because they make gobs of power stock. Or BOP because they are just weird enough. Chev V8 with 4 speed (need to save and wait a long time, this would make me hate life) I'm going to go ahead and get a disk front clip from Flat-Top Bob and a 10 bolt from another guy. Sorry Bob, free is better than cheap. So, if I proceed with my suspension upgrade, which I will, the hydraulic clutch gizmo es no sirve, dig. I will probably buy the crossmember from the donor car as well. What other parts should I grab? I think the P/S unit for sure since most 73-87 trucks had P/S. What else, hmmm, engine mounts.
You can't go wrong with a Cad 429 and Auto.........plus the unknowing will think you put a Ford in a Chevy....( because of the distributor placement )
"New here", but I have just completed a Caddy 425/turbo 400 into a 81 C-10 2-wheel drive, bolted right in!
We shoehorned a 472 Caddy into a 64 back in the '80s. Worked real well, lots of otrque on tap. I just stuck a small block in my '65. it does it for me just fine. I think if i was after an inline 6 i'd be looking for a high torque 292, unless you just happen to have a line on a 250 or so. I had a '62 with a stock overhauled inline 6, but most of my old Chebby's have had small blocks in 'em. They just work well. Oh I plum ***ed forgot, my father in-law had a '62 short bed when the wife and I were in high school with a 396 4 speed in it.
"Oh I plum ***ed forgot, my father in-law had a '62 short bed when the wife and I were in high school with a 396 4 speed in it." You were married in high school? r
There is a 66 about 2 blocks from me for sale for a grand, short-wide bed 500 Caddy. I p***ed up a REAL nice 81 stepside a few months back with a 500 in it also.
Uh huh. We were 17, lied to the folks and told 'em we were pregnant. Funny thing was that no one checked.
There are a couple of different ways to do it. If you go with a Chevy engine you will need 72-80's engine perches and will have to move to the front holes on your frame, or your ****** will hit the cab and you won't be able to pull your dist. out if needed. You can do an entire crossmember swap or the hard way (like I did it), combing 66 and mid 80's stuff. Get the power steering pump, box, and the brake booster. You will need a REZ adapter for the power steering box. The booster you will have to modifiy some. I had a 68 455 Olds hanging in my 65 'burb.... It was gonna work or so it seemed, but a $500 84 Suburban came along as a donor.... The Olds motor mounts(rubber block with a bolt sticking out)will fit the V8 Chevy towers after slotting the towers a little for the bolt, and then moving them forward. This particular engine had a crossover-type exhaust manifold setup(L manifold with a pipe under the pan to the R manifold), with the right side dumping at the rear---which pointed straight at the firewall Trip to a local country junkyard netted me another left side manifold(center dump)--problem solved. Also found by accident a 62 Cadillac a/c radiator is the same dimension as the truck rad. Using it, I was looking at hose problems with the Olds engine, but perfect for a small or big block Chevy! Had two other trucks of that era, one a 402 and the other a 427/4spd---but that's just too easy.....
