I have a 50 chevy 2dr deluxe that I'm interested in chopping the top. I was looking for some shops in the Texas area that are good at what they are doing without me having to sell the wife and kids to afford it;) I'm in the Dallas area but dont mind driving "a little" for a good chop. Any info would help. Thanks.

    Palmer is a legend!

You might also try Mark Cadena aka "Mark X" on the HAMB.

Or if neither of those guys suit you, I might give it a go if it could wait til after the Lonestar Roundup. Mark and I share a shop in Deep Ellum.

Thanks guys for the info, keep em coming...because I like to shop around and research before I invest into anything. Have you guys heard about a shop called Gas Monkey Garage....a friend was telling me they are in Dallas also and had a chopped 50 model too. And Houston is not too far to drive if the price/quality is good.

That is correct. Mark did the chop while he was working at Gasmonkey. Brian aka 'bluebrian' helped with the chop, and I believe he still works at Gasmonkey from time to time.

    Hope that helps.

I was searching the net and ran across some pics of the chop that mark did, it looks pretty damn good. Also I had another question, whats the price range(s) going around for chops(maybe 3" or 4") and estimate time it takes, I'm not really rushing anything, its just with this project I actually have a "checklist" that I'm trying to stick to and working with different shops. Thanks again

Yeah I email gas monkey also, and they told me around 6 - 7gs also, But I'm going to stop by Marks shop this week and check out some of his chops and talk about prices, And I will probably call the guy skyrodder mentioned in Bastrop Texas also to check things out also. Once again thanks for the info, I enjoy a forum that actually helps out.

Call Richard Carter @ 940-368-5571. His shop is in Krum, just outside Denton. He might do it...he might not, you'd just have to talk to him. He's converted his own `52 hardtop to a working, chopped convertible, so he knows his way around the body style. Just don't know if he'd want to do it again.

When you get prices, make sure you know what you're getting. Does it include cutting the curved windshield? Are they just tacking it back together to let you finish the welding, or are they taking all the way to primer or paint for you? How much will it cost to get new side glass cut? Can you fix the alignment on that driver side door while you're at it? Will a teaspoon of lead be enough to finish it, or do you need to buy a Bondo Factory? Does the price include materials (saw blades, cutoff wheels, primer, beer, etc.?) Stuff like that.

From what I've seen of the work of the individuals suggested above, you can't go wrong with any of them. I don't know what costs you'll get into, though.

    Palmer is the man.

He chopped Bump's shoebox so nice, Bump refused to put any filler on the job. He just primered over the welds so the whole world could see the work Frank did.

Nobody can chop like frank. He is a legend. He gas welds the whole chop, hardly any body work. Its getting the proportions right were Frank is untouchable, not to mention all of the other stuff he can do.
