Cheap rear ends are a false economy.

no one has mentioned the nodular gear case, if you see a 9" rear that has a N on the gear case its worth a fair bit of money these days.

Your friend does not understand how a free market economy works.

Things are ONLY worth what the what people are willing to pay for them.

It is called charging what the market will bear.

Your friend got less that he could have, for a foolish reason: pride.

What a shame, this spring when I started my move I junked about 20 smooth round back rears as I had no where to go with them. Tried selling them to a couple local rodders but no sale. I've went to using new rears from John's in my shop

None perfectly. Your rear axle is 56" wide. There was no 9" rear that narrow.

First generation Ranchero (rare), or first generation Mustang 65-66, are as close as you are going to get.

Each is wider than stock, by at-least an inch-and-a-quarter, and your wheel wells are already tight.

Darn, wish I'd known. I would have drove your way (from Wellington CO) and purchased several.

The Falcon is 56" from drum to drum. Early Maverick is 56 1/2" but those will be 8" (which are plenty strong), 57-59 ranchero and Station Wagon 9" are 57" - the narrowest 9", 64 1/2-66 Mustang are 57 1/4, 8" or 9"
90-92 Ranger have a 56" wide 8.8" which is very strong and bigger brakes, but the pumpkin is larger and can be a problem on lowered cars.

Average around here is $50-$150 for various width non posi's, early Bronco posi's $300-$600.

Just scored one off Craigslist about a week ago. Open, 31 splines, 3.00 gears, complete drum to drum, with panhard bar, from '66 Galaxie (perfect width for my '49 Merc). Price: $20. Former circle track guy cleaning out his garage. My advice is to keep scouring C-list, & be quick on the response.

It may have 31 spline axles and definatly big bearings/brakes..Even if 28 spline there is enough meat to get to 31 splines if shortened enough...Good starting place..

Keep an eye out for the late 70s early 80s Broncos /f-150 some of them come with the "N" case and traction-loc diffs.

I've got a 57 under my rpu. Swap meet find and paid too much but needed it at the time. Be careful on the older ones and get ALL the brake parts because there are 3 different combinations that I know of on the 57-59. Mine had the standard 1 3/4 wide drums, small bearing, and I'm running one drum that is out of spec because I can't find another one. The 2 inch wide ones you can buy new. Also no kit I could find had the hold down pins for the narrower brakes.
Don't forget the Granada 9 inch. I have a 36 pickup with one of those, kinda puny brakes though. But for my money, if I was searching out a rear end, I'd go with an 8.8, much easier to find and cheaper. Most of the Exploders had a 3.50 gear and a few had 4.10s, real easy to find a limited slip, just look for the L on the tag. I've had one laying around for 3-4 years that I paid $60 for and got the drive shaft, u-bolts and plates and sway bar.
