I was thinking of painting my car with a blended paint job like Gene Winfield. Does anyone have any picture of his paint jobs (post them up) or could point me to the right directions. Thanks...

Winfields fade jobs are probably the hardest paint style to get right. I believe several have asked him about technique in the new ask a legend section. You could also try doing a search for fade paint jobs, Ive seen a thread or two about this style. Good luck and lets see those progress pics!

No shit, I totally agree with you. A paint job like this could make or break your kustom. Since I can't get Mr. Gene Winfield himself to paint it, I was thinking of getting a lowrider painter. Some of those guys have some skills as well. It's an idea I have been throwing around in my head.

I saw the Monster Garage show when he painted Jesse's 55' Chevy. That was a bitchin' paint job.

My humble tribute to Mr. Winfield...

  8. Here's a pic for ya.
Its alittle tough to see the fade, although its kind of subtle on this one anyhow, the picture is still crappy.
I wish the hood was shut & the gold flake was at least somewhat apparent.
    Oh!
For what its worth I believe this is the second, if not third paintjob for this one:

They are pretty tough to do. You need the right paint, the right "mixing" of ingredients, the right spray technique, and a great gun.
I wouldn't recommend it on a "real" car without lots of experience/practice.
I've seen some attempts that look pretty pathetic, even with onely one color change. Doing several changes can be tricky.
Gene is really great, but has been doing this for like 40 years!
I'm pretty good, in fact, the "new' owner of the purple Lincoln, Bill Abate, had asked me, a couple years ago, to redo it for him, including replicating the purple/violet/white fadeaway paint job.
I'd try to help you through it, but I'd hate to encourage you, and have you discouraged at the outcome. It really IS a hard thing to pull off right! Screwing up one part can be a nightmare, correcting it can make you almost start all over again!

I talked to Gene awhile back, before I bought my 50 Merc and when I was still considering one of his glass bodies. He offered to paint the car for $2K if I bought one of his bodies. I believe that he was charging $6K for that same paint job at the time if you just brought a car in to him. I got a good look at a number of his blended jobs up close, both at his shop and at various shows...I personally was not as impressed with some of his blended jobs as I was with others and the quality of his work varied from car to car. With all the translucents and intercolor clears that are available today I would have to think that it would be an easier skill to master today than it was 30 years ago...it's still not a simple job but I think that if you had any previous experience with painting that you would be able to learn this technique on your own. Or, you could go out to Gene's shop and have him teach you first hand!

I have a lot of Winfield and Watson pics. I love their style, the paint they laid defines '60s show cars in my mind.

I don't know who did the Merc, but it is the right style.
