Hello fellow Hambers, I need your help finding a builder who builds alternators using your stock generator housing. I am trying to keep the stock look but upgrade to an alternator. I met a guy down in Los Angeles at Nick Alexander's open house a couple years back who was converting generators to alternators. Any help letting me know who does these conversions would be greatly appreciated.
Get your Vaseline boys!!! Read an article or two on stuffing an alternator into a generator case - looks like fun. Hey, I'd like to do it too, but lacked the time and machine tools. So, like the other chumps, I took the easy way out. Coughed up the coin and ordered a Powergen look a like. Two of them. These beauties work like a charm on our 32 and 49 Fords. But... Very pricey - ya know. They should ship you a jar of Vaseline with each unit! So, if there an easy way out, I'd like to know!!!
You probably met Ed Whitney, (714) 773-1611. He is in the same chapter of the Early Ford V8 Club as Nick. I sure miss Nick's open houses. Charlie Stephens
How much did the Powergen units set you back? Can I find the article you are referencing on the HAMB?
oldwagonlover, Got them from Speedway for $370 +shipping. The chrome copy costs more... These are one wire units. One of those articles was in R&C If I remember. Several years back. Maybe something in google? Basically took a small car (Kubota tractor maybe?) alternator and trimmed down the case to slide into a Ford case...
have your generator rebuilt and boosted up to a better amperage. Power gens are sort of like blow up dolls..............they kind of look the same but there is just something wrong .
Agreed about alternators. I prefer the look of the Genny. But if I could get more out of it I just want it to put out more. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
