I need help identifying the water pumps on my flathead. I ran the numbers on the block and it has a birth date of 2/14/50. It is at the machine shop right now getting worked. She's had a rough life. 2 of the cylinder walls needed bored 100 over to make them smooth, because of the rust pitting. No sleeves needed. Internal parts have been ordered. I'm in the process of getting external components ready to go back on the block. I figured it would be a good idea to go ahead and rebuild my water pumps before I get the block back. I have done some research and there is no rebuild kit for an early '49 water pump, they say. It looks like I have both '49 pumps, but one is an early and the other is a late '49. I'm guessing that by the pulleys. Can anyone add some input? Streetrods are drivin' by Chevy, Hotrods are powered by Ford!
The '49 Ford car and '53 truck use the same basic single wide belt pump, so that may be why the pulleys are different, along with possible early/late '49 designs. These wide belt pumps are available new from Speedway and other flathead suppliers, and can also be rebuilt by people like Skip Haney in FL.
If you're numbering your valves by cylinders you're doin it wrong. Number 1 is on the right bank. Is that piston with hole in the top the way you found it when you removed the head or is that from beatin it out? Stock 49 Merc's use the wide belt.
I realized after I did it, that they were numbered wrong. That's ok, its getting new ones. The hole in the piston happened when I beat it out. I was bound and determined to get it out. Soaking, a little heat, beat, and repeat. Streetrods are drivin' by Chevy, Hotrods are powered by Ford!
Those are truck pumps, 1949 -1953 p***enger cars have a slanted base that bolts to the mount with two bolts. They are available at Speedway as stated.
is anyone buying used water pumps as cores? I picked up a bunch at an auction and really don't want to s**** them.
Thank you much. Can I get a rebuild kit for them?I have the tools to do them or would it be better to send them to the guy in Florida? Streetrods are drivin' by Chevy, Hotrods are powered by Ford!
You could buy the kits and rebuild them, but your present pulleys do not match, along with the p***enger side pulley looking pretty rusty. I would find better cores to send out for rebuild, or just buy new readily available pumps.
Has anyone purchased Bob Drake water pumps? Any issues? Streetrods are drivin' by Chevy, Hotrods are powered by Ford!
