I have what appears to be a '39 trans. The # below the trans mount is 78-7006-3, the serial # on the Bell housing is 18-4960567, and the shifting tower has a # of 81A-7222B(has a 3" Big fork). While I was tearing the trans down, I noticed br*** colored flakes in the drain plug. When I pulled the little shaft out I noticed what appears to be the culpret of where the flakes came from. What is the name of that part and the number? Do the gears appear to be '39-'48? Keith Streetrods are drivin' by Chevy, Hotrods are powered by Ford!
not sure....there is a Tardell book on putting 46 up car gears in the early case....little better gears
The br*** comes from the synchronizer rings. A bit tough to discern from your pics but the front ring appears to be gouged somewhat. Gears appear to be the 39-48 type but better pics would confirm correctness of each gear. Our trans book covers the complete range of 32-48 (and up to '52 pickup truck) three speed transmissions. All the optional gear sets are also covered. The L-1001 book (Ins and Outs of Early Ford Transmissions) is available online.
When I get the oil cleaned off i will take better pics and post. Streetrods are drivin' by Chevy, Hotrods are powered by Ford!
