I want to build something old to haul people around in, as my daily driver. So my question is what year did chevy start building vans? I know where a pretty nice 70 suburban is but I want something older.
in the early 60's they had the covair greenbar but in 64 the real chevy vans first came out my first ride was a 67 short wheelbase i loved it they were the same untill i think 70 or 71 there where early 64-66 and the 67 and up the earlys had a flat windshild and the late had a rounded wind shild
I was thinking 64 but I wasn't sure, I am in sales now and I think it would be cool to haul clients around in an oldie.
Well before the more modern van of the 60's there was the Suburban and panel trucks which go back into the 30's
Yeah but I really like the sixties vans, slam it and flake it. I am thinking all modern drivetrain it is fifty miles one way to work.
I would love to score an old short school bus to use as a daily.Older the better! An ice cream truck would be sweet also.....
theres a guy around here with a 80's Chevy shortbus with chrome duallie wheels and i think straight pipes...i know its pretty loud.... the old man across the street has a 58-59 panel that i would love to get and make a people hauler with, but he will not sell it.....it or the 55-56 4x4 or the 57 3200.....they say he does a full tuneup on them every year or so and they all run like a top...but all they are doing is sitting and rotting away
School buses are not that hard to find. Ice cream trucks get rotten really fast and don't last more than a few seasons before returning to Mother Earth.
i know you said you want something old, but IMO an 80's school bus would be a awesome people hauler/camping rig....take out the back 2 rows of seats and put in a matress.....
i have a '64 chevy panel as my daily 1 seat only though.....sleeps good in the back. i like the dodge a-100 van myself. this link is too big and i'm to lazy to resize it: http://www.daytona-mag.com/catalog/zeppan/img/66dodge-main.jpg
hey, i know where an a-100 dodge van is that's for sale up in loveland. if you're interested, i can slip up there and take some pics...
Would the side (and rear) gl*** out of the older 'Burb work in a Panel of the same vintage? I expect they are a similar body, without the holes for windows? I know it could be MADE to work, but would it look right? I ask, as I expect your potential clients probably wouldn't appreciate a ride in a "cave on wheels." I had a '77 Panel Van (windows in the two front doors and the windshield only) and it was a ***** to see out of.
I don't have it anymore, it was a tow rig and rolling tool box / parts hauler (it was a storage shed for a while before it 'went away'). No interior other than the dash and some other brand OE buckets the PO had scab welded in (oh, did I mention it was a complete rust bucket?). The accidents it had been in didn't help eiter (hey, when I got it the price was right). So, anyway, would the windows work? (not the 'bunny' windows)
the suburban has different panels on the side, both inner and outer, you can't make it look right without a lot of work (the windows are recessed)
Now your talking! I will need windows in it, otherwise people might think it is a "stalker van" as my twelve year old daughter calls em.
if anyone wants a REALLY kick*** truck look up a 1949 Ford Bread-Truck... those things are the most kick *** engine under cab i have seen in a LONG time... and the old A100 dodges... cant beat them..
rear doors are the same and so is the gl***. the sides are different so it would be A LOT of work to make them look 1/2 way desent. personally i dont like all the light in, the extra seats and all the window rubber to replace.....that's why i have a panel truck.
Hey homie, they began with the Corvair van or Corvan in 1961....very distinct shape...kinda cool..slightly low profile than the successive ChevyVan debuting in 1964...there's a 67 in Montana that I here a dude'll let go, but can't find the digits...I got a 70.
