Need some help, new at all this stuff and searched for a while and didn't find what I was looking for. What are the main differences in 28-29 and 30-31 fuel tanks? Eventually I'm going to go with a brookville RPU 30-31 and from what I'm told I will need to supply my own tank. I found a couple in my area and don't want to get the run around when I go look at them. Thanks, Pat
Is it rusted? No? Good to go. Can get rebuild kits, or complete new fuel gauges for them that screw into the dash side of the tank. Not really much else to them. Pretty basic.
The 28-29 tanks are not same as 30-31. Not an expert on As but I believe the early units form the top part of the firewall and the 30-31s drop down behind it. JW
26Ford called it ......The early tank forms the top of the fire wall. Late A's have a removable one piece firewall. 28-9 are a 3 piece cowl 30-31 are a two piece cowl. The 30-31 drops into the top of the cowl. 28-29 the tank bolts to the lower cowl which both bolt to the windshield/A post. late A is wider. I have both in my albums. If you would like a closer look.
These guys are spot on - but just to clarify (in case you are not sure) 28/29 tank is definitely not interchangeable with 30/31. But also Brookville make a panel that takes the place of the fuel tank - you could use one of those and use an aftermarket tank and fit it elsewhere eg behind the seat.
This is the way to go,,having a gas tank in your lap is not the best way to go in these days & times. HRP
I don't think you can put the gas tank behind the seat in a RPU, maybe in the bed but not behind the seat...
Got some pics so you guys can ***ure me that this is a 30-31 tank. How many different dash plates are there, the one I picked up doesn't fit and I didn't try it until I got back to valpo.
That dash panel is '28 - '29, the '30 - '31 speedo is round. I also have heard of the '30 - '31 tanks having a round gas cap, not the one with flat sides on the '28 - '29.. and they may also not be a screw on, but that one someone else will have to clarify.
Without seeing the back of the gastank, i cant tell you what year it is. The guage cluster is not a '31. The '31 is a different design and has a round speedo. Im thinking a '30. Streetrods are drivin' by Chevy, Hotrods are powered by Ford!
Yours should fit a '28-'30. Im thinking early '31 aswell. It was April of '31 when the design changed with the fuel shut off, column mount, and guage cluster design. Went in full production May of '31. The fuel shut off went to the outside of the firewall. The column mount came off the gas tank and mounted to the dash rail support. The speedometer went from an oval to a round design. Streetrods are drivin' by Chevy, Hotrods are powered by Ford!
