Starting to collect parts for my 59 f100 project. I have no engine or trans and I might have a chance to do some trading and get a 331 hemi for it. I was wondering what people thought of that. I want something different so sbf is out of question along with sbc. I do have a chance at a y block but don't know if it is any good. Any thoughts?
An early Chrysler Hemi in almost anything is a treat for the eyes and the soul. Sure, it may not be the easiest conversion, and for sure it won't be the cheapest, and yes, a good SBC will probably out run it, but so what? GO FOR IT. Every time you open the hood, you won't regret it.
Go for it. I have a sbf in my 56 F100. However I know where a true 440 6 pack motor is. If it became available in it would go.
What year is the 331? It will certainly be easier if it is 54 or 55...51-53 not-so-much. If it is in running condition all the better as the EarlyHemi is not a cheap rebuild. .
Have room for it with that engine compartment.......barring the wiper motor on firewall, and battery location.......nothing else really to worry about, obstruction wise........sure would have some eyeball popping that hood open. This guy has a '56..... .......no battery mount.
It seems to me that the hemi into Ford pickup was popular back in the day. I think Hot Rod had an article about it, it was deemed a fairly easy swap. I'll see if I can find it.
