I know that by NHRA rules, we do not have to run a ****tershield. But by our rules we have too. My question is, will a two piece ****tershield get me through tech? I am thinking of taking a piece of pipe and cutting it in half, adding a "flange", bolting one side to the bottom of the frame and the top side to the top of the frame. The problem I am having is that no one makes a ****tershield for a Dodge truck transmission. I have looked and the only thing I can find is a blanket and they are only good for automatics.
U'm not the tech guy so take this with a grain of salt. but for me that would do it unless of course it is PVC.. But I like things a little home grown. Now that I've put in my .02 does someone have the real answer?
I believe that ****ter shields only need to cover 270* of the flywheel - basicly they can be open pointing to the ground (* at least the one on my race car is and it's SFI cert.) - Thought being that if it grenades - who cares about the cement underneath - save the person(s) in the seats and anyone outside. That said I'd use plate steel and find someone with a pressbrake or make your own press brake if you've got a hydraulic press available....
I wrote that rule to preserve everyone's manhood. An exploding clutch at 4000rpm could take your balls, your feet, your legs, your feet, legs and balls... (or any combination of those things for that matter) or worse yet... your life. So... just put some steel over and/or around it to protect yourself. I gotta get back to work. Take care, Sam.
Thanks, Sam. I have been waiting for you to chime in. I was going to e-mail you but could not. I'm not trying to get around the rules and I agree that we need one. I wanted to make sure that I was on the same page with everyone else. Of the two that are running standards right now, one has a cast iron bell housing and the other found his at a swap meet. I can not find anything for a Dodge truck ******. I want my balls to be in working order for a long time to come. I am going to use 1/4" steel and fab one up. I just wanted to make sure it was up to "our" standards. And NO, it will not be out of pvc. I don't think I would trust schedule 280 if there is such a thing.
...go to the top of the page and do a search for HA/GR. You'll find a ton of info for these vintage dragsters.
Bob, thanks for the offer. I think I will make one out of some 1/4" plate, it does not have to be pretty, just bulletproof. 3bytheknee, do a search on the hamb. An HA/GR is an abbreviation for HAMB/GAS RAIL. If you type this in the search function, it will bring up the rules and several pictures of the three that are running right now. Dammitt, Larry, you type way faster than I do!
Reg, mine is a 61 dodge truck bell and its cast iron, what year is your bell thats its I ***ume aluminum.
I think the ****** is out of a late model truck. I really do not know what year the thing is. It is the only thing I could find down here besides an old three speed that is a side loader and I do not think it will hold up to a lot of abuse.
i see 1/4" plate mentioned here. is that the recommended thickness? i want ours to be strong enough to protect us, but light enough so that it doesn't slow us down. i'm supposing that's what we're ALL trying to do. so; is 1/4" the best thickness or not?
I did not write the rules and this is my opinion. If the clutch explodes in one of our cars(which is highly unlikely--6" bias ply tires, 1300-1500 lbs) it will first have to go through the aluminum bell housing and then through the 1/4" plate. In the event that this does happen, I am sure the 1/4" plate will certainly be enough. In the event that this does happen, I am sure you will probably need to wear a diaper!!
