One of my old model A racer bodies had a LOT of Salt Flats time, and the rear wheels were almost completely rusted away when I got it 35 years ago. I was looking at it the other day and noticed from looking underneath that there had at one time been a roll bar mounted through the panel above the deck lid similar to the 1931 Morris Brothers/SO CAL race coupe found and restored by D. Tanimura (see post # 494 above). Now I am curious as to whether or not roll bars were actually used in the 1940's in dry lakes racing. I had always thought that they didn't appear on traditional racing roadsters until the 1950's. What does the historical record tell us on this???

I meant to say that the rear wheel wells were rusted away on my old race roadster body.

Howard Johansen's track T sported one as early as 1946; shown here that year at Balboa Stadium -

Couple more...I wouldn't say they were common (haven't seen one on a strictly lakes/street car), but there were a few track roadsters that had 'em.

*****in'; love the wheels. Vaguely recall the wide 5's on my '36. Yours look similar; what year?
